Vostro 1400 got a very good spec at a very good price, but I've done a bit of research here and heard some bad comments about the dell's notebook. I've got a 640M with 1440X900 screen, and yes it's a bit grainy :(

So how's the screen of Vostro 1400 like? if I choose 1280X800 screen would it be better?

I love photo editing and really need a nice screen thanks.

yep.. go with the regular wxga. I had two 1420's. One with the SEC which was not grainy but was darker, and bad bad viewing angles. The replacement had a miserable AUO panel which had tons of grainy, greasy/vasoline looking screen. Get the wxga with the 1420 or 1520.

Have a WXGA screem obviously no grains but the viewing angle is not very good. My old T40 has much better view angle. The screen is on the lighter side not too dark. There is light bleed on the base of the LCD but not too bad that I cannot live with.
Over all OK, could be much better but at this price point cannot beat it.
BTW my screen mfr is CMO

    Thanks all.
really a mixed opinions, come on Vostro users keep them coming.

aii I used samsung P20 with 1400X1050(perfect but a bit dim), then Dell 640M with 1440X900 moniter(bright but a bit grainy).

Really dunno which one to get.....

I have the SEC screen and will keep the laptop. In case I was going to work with it every day all day I might not had been enough for me but for a few to many hours a day at home it is more than alright.

All the writing about grainy screens made me worry quite a lot. Now I am a happy camper but have second thoughts about Vista... will probably keep it installed anyway.

It is a tiny bit more coarse than my IBM T60 but on the other hand it is quite bright in comparison. The T60 is annoyingly dark on the brightest setting.
