    i ordered my ispiron 1520
    duo core 2 T5250
    expresso brown
2 gb shared dual channel ddr sdram at 667 Mhz 2 dimm
15.4 inch Wide screen XGA Display with truelife
    256 Nvidia geforce 8600m GT
120 GB 5400 RPM SATA HDD

on 1/8/07 within a matter of 24 hours it moved from preproduction to in production..now its been stuck there for about 4 days..this seems weird to me considerin how fast it got in to production..so i was wonderin if the status check at the website is reliable

Actually, I had the same thing happen to me. I ordered mine (almost exact same specs except i got the t7500) on the 23rd and it went into the production stage almost immediately. The thing is, it was supposed to arrive today but the order status still says its in production :\

Plus the fact that today is the civic holiday I really doubt its going to arrive on time.

Yes. The status check is fairly reliable.

What most likely happened was that your laptop began to be built, and then Dell found that they didn't have a part on stock. So, they had to order another batch of those parts. Officially, your laptop is still being built, but no one at the plant can add anything to it until they get the next part.

When they have all the parts, they build laptops in a matter of hours.

Moving to production only means that your payment process was approved. It doesn't necessarily mean that your computer is being built.

To answer your question NO. My laptop went straight to "in production" then went to shpped.

Mine says in production wit an ESD of August 20th. This status never changed yet, even after I got the email saying my 1520 is in Texas and should be coming up to Canada shortly.

    IMO, it's not accurate.

When did you order? I ordered on the night of August the 1st and my ESD is the 20th of August as well.

Is there any way to find out the SPECIFIC PRODUCTION STAGE of our orders in Canada? All it says on Order Status page is "In Production" and even the reps can't tell specifically which stage it is in.

Nope, the online site doesn't tell you what stage it's at, and unless you can get a special rep, they won't tell you either. I'm not certain the regular reps can even tell what stage it's at.

I was gonna address this thread earlier today so ill hit it now with my thoughts...

Dell CSRs for the most part can give you no info other than your ETA and LEAD times for parts. You need to be careful because I caught a CSR adding on to my shiptime with a LED leadtime and 9cell battery leadtime. My conclusion here now rings as unreliable but....

There are CSRs who have the power to call and check on your order. They also find out specifically what part your system is waiting for.

I know this because i have been working with an executive (hate that term now) daily as well as calling support; I have been able to constantly compare the two. My executive friend has yet to mislead me (knock on wood cause he gave me some good news today) while the CSRs, for the most part are taking guesses.

The most accurate update for your system is in your dell.ca login under 'my orders'. It updates immediately I have seen. I know this because i have been through several cancellations and have called immediately after seeing one change (yes I have no life). The 'My Status' page I have pinpointed to an update daily at 9amET and once or twice at 5 at night, but not daily.

Hence because of the cancellations, I have seen the instant update on 'my orders' and watched until it was updated on 'my status' the next day.

Now, I also got a brief for our processes in Canada which is as follows:

    Pre-Production
Order entered on hold until finance clears.

    Production
Finance cleared system given a priority
System built by priority in Malaysia
    System sent to Texas
Software Installed w/OS Image and Final testing

    Delivery Prep
    Final tests successful
Boxed, Labelled and Set in right travel area

    Shipped
    Occurs when leaves facility
You may get no tracking until it hits Purolater canada
You may get none until delivery.

    Wow...that was alot!!!

Rep me if i did good; getting closer to that toaster oven/spatula combo prize.

mine went into build mode immediately. (July 6th)

was like that for about 25 days...was supposed to be received only 17 days after ordering.

However, it wasn't updated, until it was shipped. on August 1.

good news is, i'm typing on it right now to write this message! :)

They ship up from the States, so have to clear customs. You can't realistically expect it a day or two after it ships....

But I can realistically expect them to change their shipping methods. Like how about building a plant here in Canada? Maybe that will help clear up some of the back-orders...

    Apparently......

Its an average of 3 business days from Texas to the door. Customs is usually taken care of through advanced business manifests.

Hopefully, I can test this theory next week

As much as I'd like that as well, I think building a factory would take longer than to build your laptop and ship it up here. ;)

Haha just kidding, I know what you mean, but it wouldn't make economic sense for Dell. Unfortunately, they run a business and not a charity. :p

How about Tennessee? I'm crossing my fingers for it to get here tomorrow, before the weekend. How sweet would that be?

Mind you, the line's not automated, so you may still need to wait on hold for a rep.

Nice, I called them earlier today and they said my laptop will be shipped sometime this week. Anyone know how long it takes the laptop to arrive once it's shipped from the factory?

Oh yea, I ordered the black Inspiron 1520, WXGA Tru-Life, T7100, 2g ram, 8600gt, 160g 5400, no bluetooth. Order date was July 31st.
