Not here in Australia either. Not sure if this will change soon - I didn't mind because 5400 rpm is fine for a notebook. In my case, less RPM means more battery life so it is a good compromise.

By the time you pay for the 7200rpm drive upgrade, and a few other gizmos, you are better off going with the Latitude series.

The Vostro line is intended to compete at a low-end, consumer laptop price-point.

I think the Inspirions have a 7200 160 available. It's not a popular option though, considering the heat it creates and the power requirements. 7200 harddrives just aren't a good idea for 15" notebooks. You'll find them more popular on 17"

Debatable... The 7200RPM that Dell sent me for free as a replacement for my 5400RPM (thanks Dell!) has this marketting fud from Hitachi...

    http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/A198FEF5A3B22F08862572D400656432/$file/7K200DS.pdf

    They claim:
    *Comparable power draw to 5400RPM
-My 5400RPM said it needed 850MA and the 7200RPM says 800MA

*They make no claim about heat
    -Minorly warmer than my 5400RPM

*They claim as quiet as my 5400RPM
    -A little more noticable

    The drives:
    5400RPM - Samsung HM160HI
    7200RPM - Hitachi 7K100 160GB

I missed a time when 7200rpm hard drives were available (interested especially in 200GB 7200rpm hard drive). Now there is no such option in Vostro 1500 in US. Anyone could provide me with e-mail to Dell's technical support? (now I'm abroad so I don't wanna call them)

About a week ago there was an option for a 7200 rpm drive on the Vostro 1500. I believe it was a $39 upgrade. They removed it the day after I started looking at them.

7200 rpm drives have been available in various capacities on the USA website, including 200GB, and are available in 160Gb now. See, for example:

    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bqcwkpv&s=bsd

Other capacities may be added to the website later. Also, if you phone, you will probably have more options.

Also, if you are abroad, check your local site (assuming the software language, power adapter and maybe DVD region will be compatible).

In short, the Vostro's are identical to the consumer Inspirons, but are all-black and usually cheaper, and have a better return policy.

The Latitudes are higher quality but may not be suitable for some users. Their graphics card, if any, is a Quadro, which is not optimized for games. The Latitudes do not have a card reader, and I am not sure about an Expresscard.

I think a 7200 rpm drive is a desirable option in any laptop where battery life and drive capacity are not critical, but speed is.

@Fuzzy, yes, there is an 7200rpm option, but it's a hard drive with Free Fall Sensor that is a BIT more expensive :p and pretty small for me (200GB at least)

Is the 7200 RPM Free Fall Sensor HD a SATA or some low quality HD?
