also, how much space does a whole movie take up, when burned to your hard drive? is 80 gigs enough room to hold 35-40 gigs of music, and then 10-20 movies? thanks for your help guys, i love reading your posts. peace.

It is hard to tell what a good deal with Dell is anymore. They seem to offer a coupon every week, effectively making that their base price. How much space a movies takes up depends on what file format it is in. A DVD takes up around five GB. You can re-encode them and make them smaller.

5 gigs? woah, that makes the dvd burner mostly a novelty item then, who in their right mind would dedicate 5 gigs to one movie, i dont think i need the dvd burner anymore. thank you.

Actually, a movie DVD resides on the DVD-9 format, as the name suggests it's 9GB. If you go to WorstBuy to get a movie DVD, it's 9GB. A DVD-R (+/-) is the DVD-5 format, as the name suggests it's 5GB(4.7GB to be more exact). This is why nowdays you can buy "dual-layer" burners that would burn to DVD-9 format. Programs such as DVDShrink(freeware) will compress a regular dvd9 disc to a size that would fit on a dvd-r disc. Of course you do lose a little bit of quality when you do so, but the effect is really minor imo. You can further reduce the size of the file using other forms of encoding, like DIVX (can usually get a movie down to 1.2GB), or RealMedia (can get a movie down to as little as 300-400MB!). Of course with each reduction in size, comes a reduction of video quality. I have seen some 300mb realmedia files that looks surprisingly good thou.

I hope that clarifies it somewhat... lol or maybe just muddled it even more for ya... [ :)]

    cheers,

    yass

Unless you want to spend a lot of money on dual-layer blank DVDs, you will need to get DVDShrink or some other program to "shrink" to move from DVD-9 (up to 9 gig) to DVD-5. Dual-layer blanks can cost 8-10 dollars a pop where you can find Single layer blanks for as low as 50 cents sometimes.

I usually have a few movies on my hard drive at any one point. When I have free time, I will run my encoding or shrink program, then immediately burn it to a blank DVD and erase it from my hard drive. No real reason to have 10 movies on your hard drive.

If needed, you could always get an external USB hard drive and store them on that.
