Hi, I am a professional photographer. I am looking for a laptop for digital photography. I will be downloading CF cards to the hard drive, burning cd's and using photoshop. I need power over size( already lugging 100 pounds of camera equipment on location). Looking at the dell 9100. Is the P-4 in this model a better choice than a P-M in the 8600? I know the battery life is better in the P-M but hows the performance? Want to stay with dell would any other models be better.
    thanks

I would go with the 8600. I believe that you can now get the dothan PM CPUs with this model (ie 2Mb L2 cache). My reasons are that the real world performace of a 1.7-2.0 PM will be as good as a P4 3Ghz. But besides this the mobility (battery/weight) is much better with the 8600. Unless you have access to mains power on the road, I would forget the 9100.
I would also suggest getting at least the WSXGA screen, as a good screen is a must for looking a digi photos on a notebook.
