So, um, how bad of an idea is this?

Don't crash
You mean putting it in a pannier? I ride my bike with those whenever I tour or go on longer rides... I don't think it would be awful as long as you are careful. I have to ask--why do you need a computer on a bike? If it's shorter trips I'd think it better to put in a backpack and wear it. For some reason I think it would have less of a chance of hitting the ground. I think the greater danger would be forgetting to take it out when you stop and have someone take it by accident.
P.S. what does this have to do with Dell...haha -
haha, I guess it's not a Dell question, just you guys are my peeps!
Yah, pannier side bag.
I have a mountain bike with street tires on it (ie it's a better rider than knobby tires). I ride downtown to hang in coffee shops and in the public library. The only time I did it, I rode a lot slower than usual, and tried to avoid the big bumps. Did not seem too violent.
I'm worried more about the vibrations than it falling out.
It's got to be some sort of low level vibration, so, I guess, how parked are the HD heads?
It does not completely fit in the backpack. It fits pretty well, and it sits deep, I just can't get the zipper all the way closed. I doubt it would fall out, but it's def a little safer sitting in the pannier. -
Personally, I would put it in a backpack versus on a bike carrier. Perhaps you should consider getting a slightly larger backpack?

But my real question is about parked drive heads and vibrations? -
I think better to wear it while riding than having it in a basket connected to the bicycle, especially if you dont have shock absorbers. The vibration is too much in a basket than on your shoulders. I always wear the bag pack when the notebook is inside.

I second putting it in a backpack. When you put it on, you act as a giant and intelligent predictive shock absorber.
I really would not put it in a pannier. -
No doubt, not only does your body take all of the shock assuming you tighten the straps, but if you wreck the bike you still got a chance to jump off without hitting the deck
laptop in backpack in bicycle side bag...
