I feel weird about leaving my laptop running while I'm sleeping or away at work for hours at a time, like today I left it running for 8+ hours while at work, downloading wow(legally) through the wow installer. I have never owned a laptop, can it be treated just like a desktop computer and left on 24/7 like I do to my desktop and have no problems?

Some people do, but in my experience it gets far too hot after a while and I keep mine on all day, and turn it off while I sleep so it can cool off after a long hard days work :)

Desktops have more room to breathe, while laptops do not...

er...just to clarify i didn't play it to "make" money, it just ended up that way

maybe you should give it a go doubleblack...i was originally against it because of the monthly subscription, but i played some when my roommate had a xcountry race and when he came back, i refused to get off his computer.

as a general rule; if it does get hot than its no good, if it do not, then you're okay!

personally my laptop running very cool if i'm not doing anything on it, or just some light to medium task.

so in general; if u got something like a Pentium 4 notebook than thats no good; but if you got, pentium M or even better the new CoreDuo notebook, then u should be allright. i love core duo :) they're the best!

that heat is eventually going to reach a point where it's too much for the system
give it a rest every once in a while, it's not a desktop

lol! ur just like my parents!
no the heat is not increasing each minute. the cooling system in the computer will expell the heat. in fact, right now i'm stressing the cpu in my laptop; it is using 100% cpu usage 100% of the time, and it still runnning cool, the fan is going up, then going down again, eventhough it still 100% cpu usage, the cooling system expell more heat than the cpu can create.

i'm really am amaze with these core duo cpu.

Leaving it on is ok as long as it's not constantly loaded. using it as a web server that in constant use, for example, is not a good idea....

I agree with the heat - as long as it's allowed to rest a bit every few seconds or minutes you'll be fine.

Addition: I think the main problem would be the heat on the harddrive, not the CPU, as an overheated harddrive crashes.

I'm in the "I've left my laptop on for days on end without a problem" boat. As long as you're not doing anything really intensive I don't think leaving it idling for long periods of time is a problem... I'm typing on my 500m that's been on nearly 24 hours, mostly idling, and it's barely warm.
