    folks
What is tha largest HDD a DELL INSPIRON 640M (E1405 in US?) can take?
Has any one found success with a 320GB 7200 RPM HDD?

Also has anyone tried installing Windows server 2003? As a student I am eligible for a license.

    Thanks in advance...

As long as it uses the correct interface (SATA if I remember correctly) there is no limit to the size of hard drive you can install on it.

As far as Windows Server 2003 is concerned, you need to look for drivers for the E1405. You might run into problems there depending on how well Dell supports the OS.

You should be able to use any SATA (1.5Gb/s or 3.0Gb/s) hard drive right up through the various 500GB drives currently available. Dunno about Server 2003, but I think most Windows XP drivers should work fine, given that you have the 32bit or 64bit variants of both... but don't quote me on that.

ALSO, is it ok to install a 7200 RPm disk into this model?
would heat and vibrations pose a problem??

In my E1505 I had a 200 GB SATA 3.0 Hitachi 7200 RPM drive. Worked great.

I fitted a 320GB 7200 RPM Western Digital Scorpio Black.
I also installed Windows server 2003 (licensed as I am an UNI student). Everything works except the video driver, so resolution is not great. I will post the steps if anyone is interested.
