This is hard for me to explain since I know nothing about parts etc. I just received my Studio 17 and am wondering if this is normal: the long compartment seen along the 87 & 95 labels in this pic (not sure what that is) has a latch/fit that seems a bit loose. If I push on it, it makes a "clack" sounds as though the "door" has too much room to move around. Normal and nothing to worry about? Id appreciate if you guys could test yours and see if it makes a noise as well. Thanks. :)

p.s. how often is too often for the fan to be on. It seems to me the fan is on 50-75% of the time....

Sorry mate, mine looks and feels just fine where you pointed me..
My fan is about maximum 10% of the time on (that's when I can hear it at full speed)

Check your temperatures, your fan should not be running all that after unless you use a lot of CPU intensive programs.

There are a few programs; Speedfan, RMClock, and I8kfangui. I may not understand fully your issue with the latch, but it should just lock by pushing it to the left.

Yeah Im having trouble explaining it. Let me try again. Imagine the laptop is on my lap, with the part closest to me on my legs, and the back end of the laptop is not resting on anything, its just in the air. I noticed what when I touched that back end compartment (where I indicated on the pic) it "clacked" as though the fit was a bit loose. Hope that explains it better.
If anyone could tell me what that long compartment holds (battery etc,) it would help when I call Dell. Thanks!

Yes, that is the battery release latch. Have you made sure the battery was fully pushed in and then the latch pushed to the left, where the 87 is?

Thanks for the help guys. I'm considering sending this one back and getting a new one (same model and everything) simply because I'm afraid to go past the 21 days and being stuck with something that isn't working 100%. The fan is on often, the latch thing is loose, and I've had a blue screen crash twice in the last 2 days. Since I know NOTHING about computers I don't want to risk having problems with this one in the future.

Your fan issues will be interpreted as subjective by many offering their advice on the forums and will undoubtedly give mixed responses. The blue screens, however, give sound evidence that there is indeed a problem. Do to the fact that the BSOD can easily be linked to heat issues gives weight to your fan observations. I would exchange the laptop ASAP. Even if it proves to be software issues / usage patterns, peace of mind accounts for a great deal!!

Thanks Johnny for your advice. I was afraid that I was overreacting a bit, but knowing that the crashes might have something to do with the fan issue makes me want it gone now! :) It crashed again yesterday so I'm at 3 crashes in the last 3 days.

Hey Rach83, has your studio17 been having any graphics issues? I occasionally get some horizontal lines going across the screen, and always get one at the "shutting down" screen.

No, so far I haven't had any graphics issues though I was too busy during those blue screen shutdowns trying to read the text to notice anything else.
