Like lets say l reformat the HDD and install all the drivers etc..but from my understanding Media Direct will be "broken" and a utility will have to be used to repair it. But can l still use the buttons on the front (Volume, play, stop etc.) while media direct is broken?

If you installed the Dell chipset drivers and notebook software, the buttons should work. If they don't work, you may have to install the Dell Quickset.
-
So the disk to repair Media Direct should be included when l get my E1405?
-
My E1705 didnt come with any repair utlity, unless its on the resource cd. You can easily download it from dell website and then make your bootable cd by burning the iso to disc.
-
Make sure you download the MediaDirect Repair Utility (it just fixes the MBR) from Dell. Sometimes people get confused and request the MediaDirect 2.0 Install disk, which is not a repair utility.
-
The Repair utility should be on the Dell Drivers and Utilities [aka Resource] CD in the MD2 folder....

Either way, your media keys should work. They don't have a specific driver to control them, but I think they are tied into to the BIOS.

is there a way to make the buttons work for anything else besides WMP? like, can i use it on itunes, or winamp?
-
I'd love for them to work in iTunes.

found a link from google:

just tested it, and it works. u dont even have to have the window open. but it does look like u need to open this program separately from itunes. if there was just a way to open both at the same time -
There is a plugin for iTunes which is easy to install. Here is more info on it:

For Winamp, all you have to do is open winamp-->options-->preferences-->global hotkeys-->check enable -
Thanks. FYI, the link mentioned there leads to an "older" version on the plug-in. (Actually same download file, but updated info in new link) The newest can be found at:

k, thanks. I haven't checked it lately.

nevermind...just copy and paste the files into the itunes directory. it will automatically work when itunes starts. hope everyone else is as excited as me about this. haha
