Is anyone else getting little scratches on there studios where the lid rests down on the laptop? I'm getting them both on the top of the hinge and now the top of that black bar where the media controls and speakers are. You can see its from where the lid and laptop meet and rub together.

I have some right here that I just noticed a few days ago...
I thought maybe it was from being squished in my laptop bag or something?

mine are also on the hinges. there small little scratches now but don't know what they will look like in two years. I'm debating if its worth calling dell and having them fix it.
The fix will be a new case and lid probably.

It seems like the design of the laptop is flawed so where these parts rub together they will always create scratches.

I'm afraid that if I have it sent in it will come back with a different problem or problems.

That's true...it doesn't really bother me. In 2 years I'll be ready for a new one.

Did you just receive it??? You have 21 days from the invoice date to return it, for a *new* S15...After, 21 days...it's a refurb. ;)

If you are not going to be happy with the scratches now..are you going to be happy looking at them later?? You have to take that all into account, price you paid, how long you plan on having it etc. :)

    Good luck!

    Cin ;) :)

If its some minor scratch or something thats not hitting u in the eye, yes, you are right.. sending it back and time spent waiting for a replacement, the potential issues the replacement might come up with are not worth the risk...

And just make sure u aren't seeing new scratch' from constant opening n closing of the lid or if you feel the lid is going to bee brushing against the base... else, I think u might just live with it as long as it isn't being a major cosmetic issue...

And in any case, over a period of time, all these laptop' are gonna end up with scratch' and some marks or whatever, just from normal usage.. so no point in sending it back in just for this, IMHO..

That's exactly whats happening. Scratches from constantly opening and closing the lid. Why should you have to live with it? Your laptops not supposed to do that. Its like your car door scraping against the fender. Sure you can open and close your car no problem and the paints chipping off but at least you can get in and out of your car right?

a few days ago I began to notice in my studio dell 15 the same scratches that show in pictures and in bizel the lcd screen. I communicate with the technical support for Dell and send photos with the scrapes I had my laptop, they decided to make the change of the pieces were damaged but are scraping again. Solutions that have given them to you dell on this flaw? Now I am awaiting a new change of these pieces that are verging again. See photos.

It looks to me like the place you carry your laptop in is causing pressure on the lid thus making the contact.

Haven't got my studio yet (Dec.25) so I haven't direct experience with the problem. Would it be possible to put a couple of very thin and discreet rubber feet on the upper to edges of the screen frame that allows you to close the notebook but still leaves a little bit of space thus preventing the scratching?

the question is, you are going on this with their Studio 15?? or is that maybe I'm the only one to whom this happens? annoying to see that scrape the opening and closing the laptop. This is perhaps a mistake or a failure in the assembly? that can be done?

Me too am getting scratches but not where you guys are getting. The rubber stand-offs on either side of the DELL logo at the bottom of the screen rest on the speaker grill and ..what should i say...'rubberize' the grill i.e. they leave a bit of rubber on the grill.

yes, I too was going that, but it comes out clean with a damp cloth in the other hand, scratches, do not leave, they stay lined and worst of all is that when you open bay and close the laptop. The solution is not only change but to prevent these pieces again Rayen. can be done to prevent this? dell will have found the solution? you are passing this on his studio 15?

I blame the user in this case... I've not developed any of these scratches on my Studio 15 and I don't think it is possible without either loosing the lid feet or excessive pressure when the lid is closed.

I've looked at my Studio 15 closed (spent a lot of time doing that when I got it to compare to a latch) and the feet give it a nice rise above the laptop case. As a result, I have to ask what are YOU doing that is causing pressure on your screen? Scratches to your laptop case are minor as excessive screen pressure can crack or warp your LCD.

hello, these scrapes appear alone. I think that this happens when you open and close the laptop? I did not cause any pressure on any part of the laptop, use it as you or any person who takes your laptop.

Are you sure? There isn't any way on a properly functioning Studio 15 (with the lid feet in place and no external pressure applied) for this to occur. The screen rises far too high above the case when closed for the lid parts to come in regular contact with the bottom portion of the laptop. The parts on the lid and the bottom plate are smooth there are no odd lumps and other irregularities to cause regular contact.

    Hi,

I haven't experienced the scratches on the speaker grill but I have experienced problems with keyboard to screen marks. Luckily, mine wiped off. Now I always place a piece of the original thin packing foam on the keyboard before closing the laptop. This foam goes over the speaker grill too so maybe I'm inadvertently stopping these scratches happen.

This problem also affects my g/f's Inspiron.

I think as the laptops are slightly flexible, these problems are caused either when something is placed on the laptop, its in a tight sleeve or its picked up by the user (when closed), with one hand (squeezing it to grip it).

I get no marks at all now when using this foam.

Ideally the laptops should not flex and it could be argued as a design flaw. My view is though, there has to be some trade off in the interests of saving weight and cost. Some laptops are better built, but they cost way more.

    Hope this helps,
    KC

I've taken apart the studio plenty of times, and I think the reason why you get those scratches is because your media panel me be loose. Take out the battery, then you should see a thin strip of plastic between the battery bay and the media panel on top. Squish the thin plastic between the media panel and battery bay and see if it produces a click. If it's not exactly tight on, it'll create scratches. Otherwise, it won't.

I got a very little scratch on the left side of the speakers but I guess that's because of the dust there and when I close the lid it get's rubbed and hence the scratches. However, they are too little to notice and I now take care of cleaning that area properly.
