Both are decent notebooks that can be had for a good price, are you exclusively looking to buy Dell or are you open to looking at other manufacturers? Some retailers, such as HP, offer discounts to students and some such as IBM have contracts with colleges that allow students to purchase notebooks at a discount price through the school.

I am looking at Dell. They do offer discounts to students....I think 5 per cent, or something like that. I have heard too many complaints from friends about HP. Thanks

Well the 5150 is a fast computer but it is now over 8 lbs. The 600 is much lighter, around 5 lbs.

The 5150 contains the Mobile Pentium 4 chip which is similar to desktop P4's but with better power saving features.

The 600 will have the Pentium M, a chip specifically made for laptops with good performance and excellent battery life.

I would suggest the 600 because of it's light weight, good battery life. An excellent balance of mobility and peformance.

What do you plan on doing with your notebook?

I was in the same boat as you, looking for a laptop for college. I ended up purchasing the 600m for its weight and size. Its managable to carry around campus if i desired. Mine is due to arrive monday and I cant wait :)

    Inspiron 600m
    Pentium® M 1.4GHz // 14.1 inch SXGA+ // 512mb RAM // ATI 32MB Video // 30gig HD // DVD/CD-RW // ??? External Hard Drive // Burlwood Cover (gotta have that) // Wirelessly Connected // XP Home

Indeed, it's really just what you prefer. I can't recommend the 5150 at 8 lbs., when the 9100 (much more powerful) is under 1 lb. more.

Of course, in your case, I don't recommend either. [ :D] The 600m sounds like your best bet.
