    m1210 & Daemon Tools don't like eachother?

Mods: If this is in the wrong place, feel free to move

So my new toy arrived on Monday, and after reinstalling WinXP Pro SP2, I downloaded & installed Daemon Tools seeing as I've gotta bunch of backed up .iso files on my old system.

Bad idea, it turned out, as after the initial installation, the system crashed on boot. I could get it to safe mode, but until I went through and deleted every single thing that referrenced D-Tools on the hard drive and in the registry, my 1800 toy just didn't wanna play ball. (believe me...manually uninstalling D-tools is NOT fun)

Has anybody else run into this problem? My old Inspiron 8500 under XP Home ran Daemon Tools w/o a hitch, and I've poured over the Daemon Tools forums, but I'm stumped. I can't figure out if it's some kinda problem w/ the m1210, XP Pro SP2, the moon's not full, or what.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    HH ;)

    Hey HokkaidoHillbilly!

I just replied back on your other post. Yeah, I have the same problem with Daemon tools on my xps1210, just blank screen after the XP logo. Funny thing is, it is very inconsistent. Sometimes it will boot up with no problems and sometimes just blank screen. I even reinstalled XP using the Dell CD, download and installed latest drivers from dell website but after I installed Daemon Tools, problem is back. I even flashed the new OS bios (A02 - dated 07/03/06) with no luck. Even uninstalling Daemon did not help. I reinstalled XP this morning

    Regards

I've had bad experiences with DT on a few different computers I've had. Therefore, I use Alcohol 120% now.

yeah DT is evil. The new 4.xx release has spyware and all that fun stuff. I use an older release 3.7 that works fine. When that fails me I'll start using alcohol.

Tell me about it...frustrating as hell, huh? What was even more frustrating was going through the registry trying to pick out all the references to D-Tools since uninstall wouldn't work as it was never able to properly reboot. Argh....

The goofy thing is that earlier versions of D-Tools caused the same problem. No idea what's going on, but may end up trying Alcohol just to make sure it won't crash my system.

Make sure that you downloaded the correct version for your system. I have version 3.47. The version 4.03 doesn't work.

    No Daemon Tools?! :( :(

Are there any freeware alternatives? If not, what are the demo limitations of Alcohol 120%?

If you use Daemon Tools, I think you should be able to find another emulator. Alcohol120% is a great choice. I think you can find it for free somewhere, I mean you do use Daemon Tools for what. Games? ISOs?

Yeah, ISOs and older games - but believe it or not, I have principles :p

I meah, the PSX is officially out of production, right? Right? I mean, I think it is... I mean, I heard that somewhere...

But yeah, I wouldn't pirate software (nowadays) - it's just not right.

Well, the m1210 has a CD burner, if worst comes to worst :p.

You could always buy the program. It's not that expensive.

    Good suggestion!

However, I'm not into buying programs, as that costs money, you know? I'm more into saving money - I don't really have a whole lot of that stuff... and what I make disappears very quickly into the abysses of a college education.

I've been doing some research and I think Virtual CD may be available for free - search for it on Google, its web-site suggests that it's for purchase, but a very reputable download site seems to be offering a freeware version of it. Will post more as soon as I find out whether it works or not.

After going through two XPS M1210's, exchanged by Dell because I thought my machine was a lemon and tech had no idea how to fix it so they gave me a new one, I believe I've found the specific culprit to our woes.

For confirmation purposes, all of you who are having/had problems with the latest version of Daemon Tools have the integrated camera option, correct?

I've been looking around and it looks like people who have the Logitech Webcam Pro 5000 for their desktop or in our case, the integrated camera, seem to have the problem. For some reason the Logitech Camera is causing problems with sptd.sys which is a component of DT and destabilizes Windows to the point of locking up at boot.
People are also having problems with Alcohol 120% as well.

It looks like Daemon Tools 3.47 doesn't conflict though. I'll try it out and see how it goes.

    :)

Asus331...do believe you've hit the nail on the head. Been reading the Dell XPS support & Daemon Tools forums too, huh? ;)

I mentioned previously that D-Tools 3.47 was causing problems as well, but later on realized that it was because I hadn't cleared 4.XX entirely off my system...long story short, had to manually delete the bugger, including from the registry. NOT fun.

Fast forward to earlier this week. Figured it couldn't hurt to see if 3.47 by itself would work, and waddaya know...Jackpot! No problems whatsoever! We're back in business! Woohoo!

Between deleting 4.XX & installing 3.47, also tried Nero Image Drive, so that's another possiblity for those of you looking for a D-Tools alternative. Personally, it seemed kinda slow & clunky to me, and the interface isn't exactly as cut & paste simple as D-Tools, so I passed.

Also, for whoever was asking why someone would use a program like this in the first place & "Why not just buy the game? they're not that expensive"...

    *SOAP BOX WARNING*

...jumping to conclusions so quickly isn't always a very good idea. For example, The Open CD (theopencd.org) comes as an .iso. Dell's Media Direct recovery disk comes as an .iso. I've gotta bunch of perfectly legitimate stuff from my previous laptop backed up as .iso's on the HDD. Sure you could go ahead & burn a bunch of discs, it makes more sense to me to just use something like D-Tools so I don't have to make a physical copy that a) I'll hardly ever use, and b) will probably just end up as another coaster (of which I've already got more than I can count) & bit of trash in a few years. These are some of the real advantages of programs like this.

    *Stepping off soap box*

Sorry for the rant...just needed to get that off my chest ;)

If you havent installed alcohol or daemon tools 4.x then you can just install daemon tools 3.47 and it should work.

however, if you have installed d-tools 4.x or alcohol then you will need to get your hands a bit more dirty.

1.a)If you installed alcohol, you can load in safe mode and uninstall the program, not such a big problem

1.b)If you installed daemon tools 4.x, you need to load in safe mode, rename your "program files/d-tools" directory, lets say you change it to "program files/d-tools1" and then restart your computer and your computer should boot, you then need to change the "program files/d-tools1" directory back to it's original name, "program files/d-tools". and then uninstall it via control panel -> add/remove programs

    2. run regedit by clicking 'start', 'run', and type regedit then hit 'ok'. then, in regedit, browse to 'my computer'->'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'->'SOFTWARE' and delete any reference to 'Alcohol' or 'D-tools' by right clicking on them

    3. Restart computer

    4. Download and install d-tools 3.47

and that should work.... and no reformatting required
