I put my order through again because I found out that 7200 rpm hard drives for the m1210 weren't as expensive as I had originally thought. Does anyone have any recommendations or know part numbers of hard drives 80gb - 100gb that I can upgrade to?

If you are going to do the configuration via Dell directly, then you don't get to pick which manufacturer's HDD you'll end up with. Although only HGST (Hitachi) and Seagate make 7200rpm 2.5" Laptop drives, so, it'll be one of the 2:
    - HGST (Hitachi) Travelstar 7K100
    - Seagate Momentus 7200.1

As the price/GB ratio seems to be roughly the same right now for either the 80GB and 100GB models, it depends on how much space you really need. Although I'd go for the 100GB since you can never have too much space.

I ordered my XPS M1210 with the baseline HDD config since Dell always overcharges on RAM/HDD upgrades, I find it a better value to get it afterwards elsewhere and perform the upgrade myself. But, if you are not the one comfortable with tinkering then go for the factory upgrade config.

I went for the HGST (Hitachi) drive as it performs slightly better than the Seagate, while the noise and power consumption are the same for either.

The lowest price showing via PriceGrabber for a HGST 100GB 7K100 is around US$160.00 before taxes and shipping right now. I picked mine up via ZipZoomFly for US$168 last week, and just waiting for it to be sent up here by my friend.

Where in NZ are you (sorry, didn't see Auckland, disregard. I did see the Queen of England there once)? Super country, been there a couple times, parents bought a house in Akaroa they like it so much.

BTW, shouldn't that be a sheep?

Thanks. New Zealand is absolutely beautiful, and as a Kiwi, I have to make the (now slightly cliche) mention that Lord of The Rings was filmed there. ;)

I normally dwell in Auckland (biggest city of NZ), but I am actually in Calgary, Alberta Canada right now. Funny how similar these 2 cities are on some levels.

And now... back on topic (before completely hijacking this thread). :)

It looks like zoomfly totally out of stock. In fact the top ten lowest priced on froogle are all out of stock of the 100gb hitachi 7k100. Nice review by the way Angrymob, it's what made me rebuy the Dell again. I didn't get anything except $150 off, so it came out to $2,281.00 with 2 gb ram and an additional battery, same specs other than that.
