I have had an XPS m1210 for about a year now without any problems until the just the other day. The fan started emitting a high pitched whining noise for a few seconds then the noise stopped so i assumed that the fan had returned to normal operations. But after a few minutes i noticed that everything started running MUCH slower and the laptop got very hot so I checked the fan and realized it wasn't spinning at all. I cleaned the fan and it started spinning again but it is constantly making the same high pitched whining noise it made right before it stopped initially. My first question is is the fan broken and my second question is can I do anything about it without having to send it in for repairs?

In my completely unprofessional opinion, take it apart and see if you can oil it.

Fortunately the fan stopped whining but chances are its going to start again so i'm probably going to get a new fan but it works for now. And my warranty is up this month so i guess its kind of a good thing that it died now and not next month.
