So today I closed my m1210, slipped it into my backpack, and went to class. An hour and a half later, I pulled it out, and it was so hot it was almost painful to touch. Needless to say, it had not suspended properly when I closed the lid.

It seems to be working fine after the incident, but it got so hot that it fried the paint:

So, here's my question: has anyone else had a similar experience, and can I make a warranty claim? I have 14 days left on my warranty, so I need to decide quick.

    Ouch.

Whether or not they'll warranty that, I don't know.

However, you've really got nothing to lose by calling them.

Isn't Suspend something like Sleep? If it is then the laptop will actually still be on. Due to lack of ventilation the laptop would still get hot, I just don't know if heat could build up to the point as seen in your pictures.

Nah, heat doesn't build up during suspend. Only the memory is kept alive; the CPU and everything else is shut down completely. I like it better than hibernate, since it's quicker to come online when you open it back up. Battery consumption is minimal; it can go for many days on suspend without draining the battery much.

It's been fine for over a year; it's only recently that I've been having these problems. It hasn't been suspending properly when I leave it alone on battery power for 30 minutes, either.

thats bad. it is more likely a windows problem then dells problem tho, i think that is what they would argue, and not fix it under warrenty

    that sucks.......

are there any hardware damages ? LCD, or system crashes etc.. ?

I never take it anywhere unless its properly shutdown or hibernated. Windows sometimes stop shuttingdown/hibernating/suspending etc.. if there is an error in one of the running programs. So next time make sure its off before putting it in to a bagpack, and its always better to either shutdown or hibernate instead of sleep/suspend when transporting.

I've noticed in the last couple months that if I have uTorrent running with a torrent downloading, the computer will come out of standby an hour or so after it is put into standby. When uTorrent is running but no torrents are downloading/uploading, the computer will stay in standby all night. Anyone else notice this?

So, nobody has tried making a warranty claim for something like this? I guess I'll give it a go...all they can do is say "no".

Yeah, on future reference, I would just make sure that it has actually completed going to standby before putting it in my backpack. My notebook barely ever works with standby so I always have to shut it down, but when it did work, I always let it finish until the lights turned off before putting it away.

I don't know about Dell, but I'm pretty sure it voids the warranty on Toshibas. From Toshiba's website:

Me too. Dell won't know you put it in your backpack. Of course, it covers under warranty.

This could easily have happened to me. I've noticed there are some programs that prevent the suspend (I think BitComet is one of them--maybe it can be changed in the settings).

That's why I now always double-check that the power light is pulsing the way it should be before I put the notebook in a bag.
