My palm rests are starting to get faded, especially the left one. I use my laptop a lot, sometimes 5+ hours a day. I was working in a warm room over the summer, where I would use it all day. I also play games a lot, and my left hand probably applies pressure on the palmrest when using WASD, and recently ive started a game with lots of F keys (F1, F2 etc.) being used, which further stresses the palm rest.
The fading isnt very noticable. Its only in brighter lights and a certain angle that I really notice it. At first i thought it was just a little dirt or something, but when running my fingers across it and the normal part next to it, they feel very different. I have a few questions...
1. What can I do to stop further damage? Should I change my typing style, or is there some sort of cleaner that can help?
2. Will Dell replace the whole part under my warranty? Or would I have to prove actual damage? I think I have the most basic one year warranty.

yeah its cosmetic so dell won't replace it unless you can prove it hinders its functionality. It's just a common problem that is found with anything painted silver, apparently the oils from your palms wear away at the paint, as well as the friction and what not from all of that WASD use
I have a bit of that on mine as well. To prevent further fading, you could either start typing with your palms elevated, which i find to be a bit annoying, though it's proper form. OR you could get some sort of cloth or something to cover that when you use it... in my case, i have a mouse that i use so i got an ultrasuede keyboard cover from www.tombihn.com and it covers the entire palmrest area perfectly on my inspiron 6000. There's also the sticker, or the clear plastic with adhesive backing option...

I highly recommend the ProtecT laptop covers that not only cover the keyboard but the palm rest as well.

I have the same problem. The laptop is made very cheap when it comes to paint.
