i saw a thread maybe a month ago about scuff marks building up just beneath the lcd screen but never gave much though until now. did dell ever get around to fix the issue? and are all xps m1210's affected by it? only reason i'm asking is because i'm looking into buying a portable laptop and i can't seem to find the old thread. thanks.

kinda funny... my first "NEW" m1210 came with marks already on it
in fact, now that I think about it, the whole screen boarder was in bad condition and loose fitting.
good thing my second and third ones are perfect.
and no, i don't have three M1210's lol. The first one I was talking about had to be sent back. -
Huh, quality control at Dell must be slipping. When I got mine 5 month ago, it was perfect

Same here. My 4 week old laptop has all kinds of crappy marks building up beside the speaker and beneath the Dell logo.
I'll only return it to Dell if the paint starts stripping off. Until then, it's just an annoying cosmetic issue I'll put up with for now. -
No scuff marks beneath the lcd, but the wrist rests are defo showing some "character" after using my 1210 for the last 7 months.
-
i posted pics in the original thread...mine finally got to a point it pissed me off. I got dell to replace the bezel around the LCD and also the pannel above the keyboard that has the XPS | m1210 logo on it...
complain loud enough...dell will realize they cant make crap like that.
interesting enough, ive used my new one for 2 weeks, with extra rubber feet to seperate the lcd from the base of the laptop, and im still getting the marks again. -
oh, after they wouldnt budge, I showed them a link to my picstures here where they saw that many others had the same problem and it wasnt a normal "wear and tear" problem as they claimed.
-
Should I also complain to them? I mean, it's been only 4 weeks and now the speaker area looks worn down after a year's worth of usage.
-
what exactly is causing it to wear?
-
Oh... just those scuff marks. They seem to pop out of nowhere. There's also a few marks in the area between the MD/Power/Camera buttons and the XPS M1210 label.
Here are some pictures:
Come to think of it, I'm not even too sure if this M1210 came with these marks; I only noticed it two weeks after receiving this laptop.
I've tried using a 50/50 water/isopropyl alcohol solution to remove those marks. It cleaned the rest of the laptop, minus these marks. :/ -
I've noticed the marks on mine as well, but what are you gonna do, ya know?
Kinda petty to return an otherwise great machine because of some minor cosmetic problems. Better to just grin and bear it. -
I orderd a certified refurbished m1210 from the Outlet and it had one scuff mark (paint chip) between the space bar and touch pad right out of the box. I called Dell and they said to expect scuff marks on the laptop even when it is certified refurbished. I thought scratch and dent is usually beat up stuff.
However, I insisted to have the entire palm rest replaced. Dell technician came over today and did the replacement. He had to take the enitire until apart to put on the new palm rest. I wish Dell would use a better finish like HP on their new laptop series.

Hi all,
I've had my 1210 since Dec and have no marks on it. But at this time I'm not traveling with it alot. But Targus has these small suede pads that you can put on the laptop where your hands sit when typing to prevent wear. (Sorry no link). I bought a pair when I had my Fijitsu. Dark gray and very cool. They probably measure 3" X 4" and 1/8th inch thick. They would fit perfectly on the 1210.
Of course I haven't seen them for a while, but I will look them up now to use. -
i have no problem with the palm areas. its abnormal wear around the LCD, end of story.

I've dug up s4iscool's posts (since he said he posted pics in the original thread), and the original thread is over here.
As for that high quality picture you posted on page 3, the situation with my laptop is far worse than just a few little dots beside the Dell logo. -
yup, mine got much worse as well, which prompted me in contacting XPS chat and getting it replaced. It took the rep a minute to speak with someone else, but they eventually replaced the pannel. You can do it yourself its so easy, but they sent a tech to do it at my home.

my m1210 has the same scuff marks.
Whenever you close the lid, the place where the marks are rubs against the upper edge of the power button panel, causing the silver paint to come off.
