So I got my m1330 today. Since I've got a couple copies of Vista Ultimate, I decided I'd reformat straight away and put Ultimate on my m1330.

I got up to "finishing installation" where it reboots and tries to go into Windows. From there, it does the little Windows is loading slider thing you see every time Windows boots... and then bam.. bluescreen.

I've tried disabling devices in the bios and running the Vista setup repair tool. Nothing works.

    Any ideas? :(

This really needs to be PINNED because I post this same exact thing (written by me) at least once a day here...

That problem is because the OS can't see the drive, but it does because you installed it...right? Typically, you assign RAID drivers and stuff so you can install on that drive because it doesn't see it...but this gets confusing, because it actually sees it. When it asks you where to install, you'll see an option to load drivers - you want to go to support.dell.com and download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager and load the drivers in there prior to installing. The problem is you need a special AHCI driver, and not the generic Microsoft one. Yes, this is really frustrating and I was the first person to post about this in the forums - I called Dell and they had no idea what I was talking about, I had to figure all of this out on my own...

If you don't know how to do this, or anything like that...and don't mind taking a *small* performance increase for ease just go into your BIOS and see the HDD operation mode from AHCI to ATA and then you can install Vista using ANY disk!

The direct download link for Intel Matrix Storage Driver is here:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=41&fileid=205611

Oh, and this applies to the 1420, 1520, 1720, m1330, and I assume the m1730 as well ;)

Thanks a lot.. it's booting now. I should have used the search feature, sorry. I felt stupid after I posted when my friend sent me a thread with your reply.

Anyway, I changed the bios and am going to try installing that driving and changing the bios back.. thanks a lot. You have saved my day. :)

Hardware drivers possibly? Have you tried booting into safe mode??

Im wondering if something isnt being recognized properly such as LED or HDD somehow

Familarize yourself with the drivers at Dell support, then, in safe mode, go to system devices and see whats up??? or rather not working.

Warning...you will see lots of yellow exclamamtion marks until all your hardware drivers are reinstalled.

Did anyone try to load these drivers during the Vista installation? You can use a floppy or USB key to load any special RAID or other storage drivers. I'm curious to see if Windows will use that one when it installs if you use it to see the disk in the first place.

Here is a link to Intel's download page for the utility to make the floppy disk

You can use the drivers in the driver CD included with the computer. Just swap the discs when you get to the part where you need to choose which partition to install on and click the little button in the corner. The driver should be detected automatically.

I'm not sure how to install the driver now that I am in Windows.. I don't want to just start deleting things in System... :/

    Tempted to reformat lol.

I'm thinking that maybe you can't switch it, since that wouldn't actually make a lot of sense.. Windows thinks I have ATA, instead of AHCI, because of the bios setting.. yeah.. thinking I'm gonna just reformat. Sigh. lol

looks like if people want 64bit theyll have to use ATA for now.

Warning: If you try to install the files from disc, Windows will make you select them manually and then refuse to spit out your disc. Literally. My m1330 is just refusing to eject. If I cancel the installation, I regain control of eject. This is just pathetic.... gonna have to digg out a thumb drive or something to install off of instead.

I haven't gotten my m1330 yet but i will also want to install Vista Ultimate clean onto it.

    Do I:

    1) need any other drivers (nvidia? sound? bluetooth?)
    2) My understanding is that dell has partitioned the drive for various things like Dell Media Direct and stuff, will I wipe all that out with a fresh vista install?
    3) Does a recovery CD come with the system, in case I box my computer and want to just go back to dell config?

    Thanks!

Okay so I used an external hd for the driver. I'm in Windows and working now.

tsyndr, I always install all the various drivers like nvidia and stuff.

    I wiped all the partitions.

Yes, it comes with a recovery CD.

You can't do that, once you change it you need to leave it be unless you reinstall Windows. You need to either install the driver, or leave it set to ATA PERMANENTLY.

As for x64, the download is here:

This is not needed, to preload the AHCI driver during Vista installation. Vista's stock driver will get the OS up and running. I then install the latest drivers directly from the Intel website. I did this about 8 times already on my Vostro 1400, trying to pinpoint what exactly is causing the OS to hang going into/out of sleep. Oh yes this is with the HD in AHCI mode.

Vista's stock driver even loaded the OS on my new HTPC, running on a Gigabyte P35 DS3P mobo with the ICH9R controller in RAID0 (2x 500GB). I didn't plan for it to pick up my RAID0 drive running off the ICH9R; I actually made the floppy with the Intel driver already, turned out I didn't need it! Same deal, after the base OS is up and running I grabbed the latest drivers from Intel (chipset and Matrix Manager). I ran HDTune before and after loading the Intel drivers and saw no difference in performance..

To what, load the drivers during the Windows Installation or change your HDD mode from AHCI to ATA?

Yes, but which disk are you using? The one that came with your Vostro, or a Vista Retail Disk?
