It can be used as a modem, if you have certain software, you can transfer music, photos, videos etc. Thats all I know of and use mine for.

i ordered a dell bluetooth module, and hopefully i will be able to tell you when it comes in,

i had a usb bluetooth which had bluesoleil software, which used BLUETOOTH to connect to your phone's internet. it was really cool, but i don't have internet on my phone so i couldn't try it.

You shouldn't need any additional software on the laptop...or I should say, I have an m1330 and I didn't need any.

The cell phone firmware must allow its use as a modem, but this depends on the provider. Verizon, for example, uses firmware that cripples its phone in several ways including preventing its use as a modem. But hacks are easy to find.

Making a BT connection for the first time requires learning some new concepts and language. But once the two devices know about each other, it should be just like using a dialup modem except faster.

Some providers may require a data account. Verizon does, but if you don't use the faster EVDO network (i.e. stick with the slower and older X1), you are not charged anything other than minutes for occasional modem use. Heavy users may be hunted down and killed, I mean billed. But every provider has different rules.

I use my Treo 750v (live in New Zealand) with a data plan and sync the phone via bluetooth with my laptop.

I can be on the road with nothing but my phone and laptop and be hocked up to the internet in no time. Once configured it's easy to use.
Also works well syncing with Outlook (emails, contacts, calendar), and any files (mP3s, word/excel documents, and videos).

Not having to connect cables is the best part about it!

Don't need any extra software to do this.
