Does anybody else's m1330 dvd drive go crazy loud when the laptop wakes up. IE, if I open the lid, and it wakes up, the dvd drive makes tons of noise. Like it's trying to read a disc or something.

Is there a reason for this?

    Thanks.

I believe thats normal (from that I have read - still awaiting my 1330). It makes this noise on startup/wake-up. One solution is to place a blank cd/dvd into the drive, this will prevent it from trying to "suck in" a non-existing disc, and it will attempt to read the blank-cd/dvd which of course it cannot.

Give that a try and let me know if it works out! If its does +Rep me :)

The drive in most cases is made by Panasonic. There are also hitachi drives aswell though I belive. Both of them make the noise I think it happens when the drive is powered up (so when it 1st recives power) think of it like a POST (power on self test) basically it resets the position of the part that pulls a cd into the drive if there isn't a disc in the drive already.

This is becasue when the drive does not have any power it is possible that if the laptop is suddenly jolted or if you stick something in the drive the part that grabs the cd to pull it in could be moved and if its position is not reset you wouldn't be able to put a disc into the drive. When thier is a disc in the drive the disc stops this part from being moved so the reset does not have to be perfomed. Im not 100% certain of that but from a engineering and reliablility standpoint it makes perfect sense.

Crazy loud is a little excessive. I will say that sometimes its louder than other times but i'm used to it by now.

Hmm...thanks guys. It isn't a big problem, but I do get stares when I open it up in a quiet room or library.

This noise is normal, nothing "loud" about it unless the drive is broken.

As has been suggested, keep a blank disc in it.
