We have a bunch of screen and keyboard cleaning threads in this forum, but I couldn't find an answer to this. I have a large smudge on the palmrest to the right of the touchpad, and left to the intel and windows stickers. I had a minor spill on the palm rest, and i tried cleaning it with a towel/cloth. That was awhile ago. Now, there is a dried up smudge on the palmrest. What is the best way to get rid of the dried smudge stain on the brushed aluminum palmrest.

I would suggest the same thing I suggest for screens: alcohol wipes. Nothing ammonia based, as that can discolour the plastic, but alcohol wipes are great for computers, since they aren't likely to spill, and the moist spot evaporates quickly.

I use Windex with a few drops of water. Doesn't harm the finish at all. I've cleaned mine so many times now, if it was damaging I would see it by now. It makes the finish feel so smooth and clean!

I find that by simply using a finger on the palmrest of my work 1501 I can clean off pretty much anything. The build up of heat and friction over the area where I rub tends to break up and peel away whatever grubbiness or stickiness that builds up over time.

'No purchase neccessary'... 'or your money back'. :p

    @L. Rawlins:

I would think that would cause a build-up of oil from your skin. Whatever works, though :D

Until I got the M1330 with the aluminum palmrest, I didn't realize how much oil actually builds up on there. With my old Dell laptops, you could never feel the oil buildup and the palmrest turned black. With the M1330, it's nice to be able to clean it and looks brand new again.

The palm rest is aluminium so you can use anything to clean it short of acid. and unless your using something abraisive that probably wouldn't couse to much problem anyway. Some some useful infor if anyone interested: Aluminium is highly reactive but it in air is forms a aluminium oxide coating on itself which is totaly inert so basically nothing effects it. If you scratch the surface this coating is screatched off but it basically instatly re oxidises and reforms.

But for best results 100% alcohol or alchohol wipes. Windex is also awesome for cleaning it nearly as good as alcohol but doesn't leave steacks but thats not going to make much of a diffrence anyways.

Why the hell would you use Windex to clean your laptop. It contains harsh chemicals and is not suitable even if used in small quantities.

Seems like alcohol wipes are the way to go. I'll give it a shot this weekend and hopefully the smudges go away.

you would use windex becasue the harsh chemicals happen to be good at cleaning things. And seeing as the palm rest is aluminium its not going to hurt it anyways. But I wouldn't recemond windex on plastic because it could do something to that.

I bought screen cleaning isopropyl alcohol wipes and used them on my m1330 palmrest and screen. I then used a microfiber cloth and wiped in circular motions on the screen and both the screen and the palmrest look as they did when I first unpackaged the Dell box for it. Thanks for the alcohol wipe tips.

Just letting you guys know the windex isn't really the best thing for LCDs.

I hear it will make screens dull in time.

I use monsters screen cleaining solution I got from circuitcity. The price was little high at 3x bucks, but it does the job wonderfully and worth the money IMO.

Yeah, I dont advise using some chemicals in cleaning the screens because they can cause damage on the screens but this one is about the palmrest so its ok.

$2,00 Microfibre cloth a bit damped, does the trick for the whole notebook, palmrest, screen, keyboard, even the Tuxedo Black fingerlovin lid....

Are you kidding? Never touch your screen with anything, including your fingers, except with a damp, soft cloth or similar. Never use alcohol or windex on the screen, that's just asking to ruin your machine.

Why would alcohol wipes, which are originally meant for cleaning Laptop screens, damage them?

...boy sounds like part of the script of American Psycho*...

*"In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion."

    (j/k of course ;))

Where can you by the microfiber cloths? My screen is a mess!! I don't have the backlit LED screen, just the cheaper screen (but I love it anyway).
