i've had two of my dvds scratched now from the slotload dvd drive. only the inter track of the dvd is scratch, not big scratchs but very small fine ones, that completely cover the inter tracks.

i was watching a movie on the couch with the laptop on my lap and got up and a few times to answer phone and get something to eat, it made some noises that sound like the dvd was in contact with something internal.

i decided to test some junk cd and dvds i had, i played the dvds and slowly rotated the laptop 45 degrees forward and back, it started making the noise and when i took out the dvd it was scratched.

i'm not sure if this is common with slotload drives. has anyone with a macbook or another m1330 experienced this?

Err, maybe it's just me, but I always thought that you weren't supposed to move a laptop with a disk in the drive under any conditions...

rofl :) well, you can, but not while it's spinning ;) I don't think I would be risking damage to my dvd recorder to test this theory out. If it has a rotating disk in it, I'm not moving it. OK, maybe I do, but very carefully. Besides, I think ANY dvd player will scratch the disk inside if you subject it to enough movement, not just the slot-loading ones.

Only drives that you snap the disc in the centre can be moved somewhat. But drives that are just placed in the drive tray or are slot loaded, will spin, but the disc is not secure if moved.

Good to know. I wonder if dell should've posted a warning about that, otherwise they gonna get hit with a bunch of failed dvd drives because some fool used 1330 as boombox and walked around with it on his shoulder

While this may the true - I cringe at the thought of the design logic. I can see that they didn't expect the scratched disc issue to crop up on the Xbox - after all, that thing's not exactly meant to be used on the move, but a laptop on the other hand is intended for that exact purpose. To design a drive for a laptop that requires it to be perfectly still during all of its use is somewhat irresponsible.
