How do I go about obtaining this 64 bit vista, I heard you couldnt get this with OEM Vista?

Would it be a completely horrific terrible bad bad bad idea to switch to 64 bit vista?

    I'm using an m1330

edit: With the free 64bit from the microsoft website if you have the 32bit , I heard you could not do this if you have the 32bit vista from dell, and you have to buy it full price. If that makes sense. It's late.

I've heard somewhere that I would be able to use the same serial number of the 32-bit version for the 64-bit version.

Is this true or just complete rubbish?

If you buy retail you get 32 and 64bit

OEM its one or the other. Dell use OEM

    Now that's just great. :|

But I reckon the 64-bit version is apart from the capability to adress more RAM not that superior, so I will do just fine.

I tried 64bit Vista on the 1330 because I wouldn't listen and had to learn for myself. IMO you will eventually run into driver issues.

I have never run into a peripheral that didn't have an available driver for Vista x64, AFAIK.

I suppose, if you're running a cheap webcam made in 1998, you might have some trouble getting a driver for it; but any modern device (including my 3 year old Samsung laser printer, various HP lasers, fingerprint scanner on my laptop, my current and previous gamepads and other devices) should have drivers for Vista x64.

There are no issues with 64Bit drivers given exception to taking the time to find them. There are several on his site who would never go back to 32Bit. 64Bit runs much more stable, allows the use of all RAM, runs 32 and 64bit applications quicker and allows you to use your processor at the level it was built for.

Search to find the various 64bit threads that will help u.

EDIT: My M1330 with Vista Ultimate 64, 4Gb ram, an SSD. clean installed and tweaked with the two articles in my sig block returns a great score of 6224 on PCMark05...unheard of for a laptop. I had it very close to that with an hd as well.

I did not, and still don't see an option when configuring the 1330 to get the 64-bit version instead of the 32-bit from Dell. Since my 1330 came with the 32-bit, does that mean there is no way to upgrade to the 64-bit without paying the full upgrade price?

    Here's what I did.

-Download the 64-bit disc online. Don't ask me where.

-Use ProduKey (search for it) to extract your key from Vista 32.

-Open the Vista 64 / M1330 thread and learn a bit about drivers and what will be needed, most notably the SATA/AHCI fix somewhere between pages 28-32, can't remember.

-Start a new install (boot from CD) of Vista 64. Note your key will only work on the same version. For example Home Premium 32 -> Home Premium 64. It will not work for any other version or product.

-Have fun setting up your new system

I was mostly concerned about the key for the 64-bit. I have a retail version of Vista Home Premium on my desktop and am going to use that key to request the 64-bit DVD. I assume I should be able to use ProduKey to get my key from the 1330's 32-bit key and use the DVD for the installation, right?

    That is correct.
