    I've been running XP Pro SP2 for almost 5 months on my M1330. Everything works except my LCD screen does not shut off when the lid is closed. I know this has been a problem since day one but was wondering whether there is a remedy?

    I have the power management settings set to "do nothing" when I close the lid. The other options are stand by and hibernate; both which work fine.

    I do not have this problem. I have XP on my 1330 and that is one thing I've really like about it. I close the lid and it shuts down fast. I open it back up and it starts up fast and I can leave it all night closed and it uses almost no battery and is ready to go as soon as I open it. My specs are below and I have the A07 BIOS if it matters.

    Edit: I didn't notice you had it set to "do nothing". Mine is set to go to standby when I close the lid...

    Uhm, yeah with that setting it ain't going to do anything when you close the lid.

    dpilot83,

    I might have to install XP in a dual boot situation on my wifes 1330. Do you have anything that does not work on your 1330 with XP installed?

    Thanks!

    You guys misinterpreted what I said.

    I want the LCD screen to shut off when I close the lid NOT the system to shut down, hibernate, stand by. These are two different things.

    Normally on any notebook, closing the lid will automatically turn off the LCD screen; like a fridge light when you close the door.
    It seems that on XP, it does not work but on Vista it does.

    As of now the wireless USB minicard does not work. Dell does not provide drivers for it for XP. Other than that I'm really happy with the way it works. I've got a second laptop identically configured and it's on XP as well working flawlessly as well. I must say that I have not installed the quickset and other things that I don't know what they're for. Previously I wasn't much of a laptop guy so it's entirely possible that there are things a laptop normally does do that mine doesn't do and I'm unaware it's supposed to do it. That being said, I'd recommend it without reservation if you feel you have a good reason to run it over vista.

    Thanks for hi-jacking the thread :rolleyes:

    Quickset is a program used to control your shortcut keys. Fn + (key)
    i.e. adjust brightness, volume etc

    Yeah, I was kinda feeling bad about that....anyways, I installed the quickset (which is not on the Dell drivers list for the 1330 btw....you have to go to the XP on 1330 thread in this forum to find the quickset app that works for the 1330) and everything appears to work fine.

    As far as your screen turning off is concerned, what do you have against setting it to go to standby? My guess for it coming out of standby for me is about 3 to 5 seconds....hardly notice it....

    ::Edit::

    I counted. From the time I open the lid to the time I can manipulate programs is 5 seconds flat. From the time I open the lid to the time it has reconnected to the internet and logged back on to messenger is 20 seconds flat. I can imagine that being too much for some but I guess I"m satisfied especially since it saves me much in battery time. I'm going to experiment with the lid closing thing just to see how it works on my computer though out of curiosity...

    ::Edit 2::

    I just went to "control panel", "performance and maintenance", "power options", "advanced", and changed it to "do nothing" under "when I close the lid of my portable computer". I hit "apply" and then "ok" and then closed the lid. When I opened the lid back a few seconds later the screen was off but immediately turned back on. I guess it appears to me that with my configuration it works fine.

    i have the same issue.
    I close the lid, but the screen stays on.
    btw: for those of you suggesting stand by, not everyone is the same.
    ie: sometimes I am watching something thru the HDMI port, and want to save power and LED screen life by closing the lid, and watching it on my TV.
    Also, sometimes you have it running tasks, but want to close the lid to preserve screen life and battery power while a task is running, etc....
    when I had it with Vista, it worked, but it was sooo SLOW in vista, and SPEEDY fast in XP!

    Since the m1330 was never intended to run with XP, that may be the root of the cause and the drivers will not turn off the screen when the lid is closed like it does on Vista.

    I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for a fix for this unless you plan on going with Vista.
