is it normal for xps m140 to make a noisy sound when loading and running application? when i run diskperfect and defragment, it make a loud noise while it defragment. or when i load word, access, excel it would make noise. at startup when the dell logo appear and it load, does it usually make any noise as it load? sounds like the hard drive is making all the noise.

Well the hard drive should make some noise. You might want to check it in quickset and see what the hard drive is set for. If you set it on performance you will have more noise.

I am not at home right now, so I can't tell you. I am sure one of the other people will be able to tell you where to adjust it. I think when you click on the Quickset power options. But don't quote me on that. :)

i restart and hit F2 and was able to see it was set at Bypass by default. i change it to Quiet and then Performance but the noise was the same. it didn't get louder or less quiet. it was at Bypass because it said it was set for old drives. february 2006 notebook. does a toshiba disk drive make a difference on how much noise it make?

Brand does make a difference. If you don't think it is normal, call Dell and see what they can do. They might send you a replacement. :)

Hi Battousai, to answer your question the m140/630m makes zero noise, therefore there is a defect in your computer, i think it is the hard drive but it is difficult to say from here. Just one thing for sure, zero noise in my m140 and when i say zero i mean total zero noise. Also heat is almost zero. You might also want to check the heat of your hard drive by touching the bottom of your computer where the hard drive is located.

Anyway, call dell for support you might have to replace the hard drive. Please once you can dell post here your experience with Dell Tech Service. Some people say it s***s

I call xps tech support and got immediate response after entering my service code. He told me that it is normal for small laptop hard drive to make noise because they are more compact together. He told me to run a diagnostic on the hard drive - confidence test to see if it made any noise when testing. I said it didn't make any noise so he told me just to restart because the hard drive. So I got no replacement. So I decided to run the diagnostic test on the hard drive myself and when I run the hard drive - confidence - random seek in middle of media and then the hard drive started making the clicking noise but still passed. I then continue with the hard drive - seek test and it also made a clicking noise but still passed. Gonna call them again and talk to them about the other hard drive test making clicking noise and ask for replacement test to see if the replacement hard drive will make any noise. The bottom where the hard drive is hotter than the opposite side where the fan is.

I called them up again and told them about the hard drive noise and also the buzzing noise I just discovered. I ask for a replacement test to see if the new hard drive would make it stop but he said no. He said dell can only send out a replacement if the diagnostic show an error message and said that the diagnostic will detect everything. Yes, he said everything. I just wasted running the extended, custom, and sympton tree testing up to 4 hours and all passed but all I get from XPS tech is a no replacement because it show no error. He didn't say anything about what would cause the hard drive to make so much noise or why it was buzzing at times. He didn't even answer any technical questions except saying that if the diagnostic show no error, they won't send out a replacement. Guess I have to live with a noisey hard drive and the buzzing sound. I cannot return because I bought this on ebay. XPS special tech aren't so special.
