I can only seem to spec a m1530 with a 5400rpm drive, no 7200rpm option. Bah.

Anyone know if it's straightforward to replace it with your own drive? And would that invalidate the warranty? And while I'm at it, any recommendations when it comes to fast laptop drives?

Fingers are getting itchy and the debit card is at the ready... :D

It is pretty straight forward - there is even a youtube video if you search.
Make sure you get 2.5" SATA drive.

Swapping the hard drive should be a walk in the park. Looks like two external screws, and then maybe another one or two. I'd say pull the trigger and buy the one you're looking at getting!

Try calling Dell, they usually have the ability to add parts that aren't available on the website.

BTW, large capacity 5400 drives are on par with 7200 drives in terms of speed/performance.

OK thanks guys. Good to know it's not hard to change the drive.

@lqaddict: I didn't know that large capacity 5400 drives were on par with 7200 drives. How can that be? I notice your 1530 is sporting a 7200rpm. :D

@stevey5036: I asked the CSR over Click-to-chat and he said no 7200 option on the 1530. Would I have more luck if I phoned?

I got my laptop through EPP and combined deals that were available, however I could not alter the HDD/memory configuration to lower the price even more - it would've cost me more. So, I ended up with a 7200RPM drive and I paid for it the amount I had in mind to spend on the comparable configuration :). At the time I ordered my laptop 320GB 5400RPM drive was not available, and now I see it cost less than the upgrade to 200GB 7200RPM drive. Had it been available to me when I was placing the order - no brainer, I would've gotten the larger capacity drive, and save even more on the total price of the laptop. Hell, if I were on the market for XPS M1530 today I would've gotten WXGA+ LED LCD and 320GB drive for the same/or slightly less total than I purchased the one featured in my signature :) (EPP 10% off, etc.) But as you know, there is always arms race with the computers nowadays, so the best option just settle on what you have right now.

    Hehe I agree.

BTW Do you have any reference for the 5400rpm large capacity is same performance as 7200rpm?
