i heard stuff about the slot loading drive on the m1530 doesn't like the miniDVDs that come with certain hardware and such. so my question is : is it true?

Yes. The slot load drive is for full sized. You can attempt to stick in a mini DVD, but it wont suck it in and all you will end up with if you push deep enough, is having a hard time trying to take it out with a paperclip if you can. Its not a matter of it having a hard time, you can't use them, period.
The hardware was designed to take in full sized discs and align them. Because of the size of the mini DVDs, or CDs, it can't align it at all. -
That sucks. Amazing how the Wii's drive works fine but these don't.

It actually works with mini dvds (though only the circular ones as far as I know). You just have to aim well.
