    m1730 backlit keyboard => Inspiron 1720?

    No, the data cables are different, and the Inspiron 1720 lacks a connection for the power cable needed to use the LED's.

    Neither the M1730 and 1720's keyboard have data cables. They are connected via onboard slots below near the touchpads, thus both are switchable and compatible. Tried and tested it works. They both have the same and exact keyboard structure.

    However as you said, yes the M1730 has an additional power cable located at the left side of the keyboard for the LED lights to work which the 1720 lacks to connect to the motherboard. Therefore LED back-lit effects will not work on the 1720 but the keys will work.

    Is that so? All the notebook keyboards I've seen have thin ribbon cables that connect to a slot on the motherboard. That's interesting...

    Well, bigddybn, looks like the keyboard itself will work, and if you can find some way to provide power to the LED's, that will work.
