my vostro has 120 gb HD space, with partition and other things, my main drive has 107 gb of total space. just realized today that i only have 71gb left on the drive. so i added up the size of all files in my drive with was less than 20gb, where did those 16gbs of space go? btw, my recycling bin is empty

Recovery partition, media direct and the fact that 1 advertised GB!=1 usable GB.

I can't explain the entire 16GB but I can explain some. Your 120GB HDD will never be seen as 120GB because that 120GB is based on a KB bieng 1000 bytes, then the MB being 1000 of those missized KB, after that GB based on 1000 of those missized sized MB. The computer sees all those 1000's as 1024's so you lose space (which you never had) it has to do with base 10 vs base 2. Many other posts on this. My 160 reads as 149 with no hidden petitions or any other losses. That is the math alone.

es thatk you, but i understand that, thats why instead of full 120gb i have 107gb in main and 2gb in recovery, the question is that, i have used 20gb while it is indicated that i have used 36gbs. for your infomation the system arrived with 97gb of free space
