Presently I am using a dell inspiron 1420 laptop which has 2GB of DDR2 PC2 5300 memory modules. I want to upgrage to 4GB using DDR2 PC2 6400 modules. Will my computer recognise this type of memory.

They'll work... but they'll only run at PC5300 speeds; that's the best that your chipset can do.

Yup to the above. The PC2-6400 modules will downclock to PC2-5300. Just make sure when you install the memory you run Memtest or another benchmarking tool to make sure it is stable.
