Hi there I am just new to the forum and have currently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1501.
I have notived that it has 2 memory slots and one of these are occupied by a 512MB B Dimm. Which has the following markings on it. PC2-4200S-444-12-A0. I want to fill the other slot and was wondering the following:

Must I use the same spec of memory i.e. 4200?
    Can I use a 5300 512MB memory module?
Can I put a 1GB memory module in this slot to make the machine have 1.5GB ram?

    Thanks in advance JD..

no, you can use other speeds

yes, but if you have pc 4200 ram in the other slot, it will auto clock the pc 5300 ram down to 4200.

you can't have ram running at 2 different speed
yes, you can have 1x1024mb 5300 ram and 1x512 mb 4200 ram

but beware that the faster ram will be clocked down to the level of the slower ram

Thanks for the quick replies folks it is appreciated. I realise the memory will downclock to that of the slower ram. Is there a great deal of noticable difference in speed between the 4200 and 5300 memory? thanks jd

No you shouldn't notice the difference between DDR2-533 or DDR2-667 in "real life".
