This is really driving me crazy. At first I thought it was in my head, but, it's not. I'm having a really hard time with my mouse.

It's your basic M$ Wheel Mouse Optical. These things have been such good mice that I have like 5 of them. Light, accurate, cheap. I've never had these sorts of problems though.

Selecting windows and trying to move them usually pops them to maximize.

Clicking and dragging a file. It seems like I have a file selected, then it just forgets I have a file selected and ends up drawing a selection box.

Multiple select a few files. Go to copy them to a new folder, when I hover over the folder it just moves them. I don't let off the mouse, and I never have a chance to press ctrl to get the + sign going.

Selecting a file sometimes opens it. Sometimes it just selects it.

Stuff like this. It's hard to explain, but basically, about 1/2 the time, the mouse seems to have a mind of its own.

    Windows XP MCE, clean install

Default mouse settings. I've lowered the double click and slowed the mouse down and no improvement, it's still crazy mouse.

I'm a pretty experienced user, and I'm not working any differently than I have, I'm just having crazy mouse about 1/2 the time, and it's really starting to affect my ability to work. I'm wasting a lot of time fighting my open windows and wondering why my files were moved and not copied. I get nervous when I go to select files. I have no idea what's going to happen. Is it going to select the file? Open an app? Move them to who knows where?

The killer is, sometimes it seems to work right, sometimes it's just crazy mouse. No rhyme or reason that I can tell.

It sounds like the computer thinks the mouse is double clicking, thats why when moving a window (from the top bit) it maximises.

It would also explain file de-selection and it then turning into a drag.

As for the solution, I can only suspect the following:

Mouse, motherboard (at the conenctor?), OS/ a virus.

    Hope this helps.

I ran that Defender thing. Nothing.

Also, it's not consistent. Sometimes it works ok.

But it is really starting to annoy me. I'm having to do things with total deliberation, and even then I'm having to do things 2-3 times sometimes.

I'll try another USB port. Argh.

[edit] looks like it was the mouse. I need to troubleshoot more.. and post less. :rofl
