Ram: yes. Here is the service manual for the 9300 http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9300/sm/index.htm . You'll find the instructions under Memory Module. Once you reboot, it will automatically detect the new ram and ask if you want to continue or enter setup before it loads XP. You don't need to make any changes in setup, so you can just continue.

Leakage: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2369&review=Dell+Inspiron+9300+series under Display, there are a couple of pics about light leakage. The leakage causes the display is brighter at the top and bottom. You will be able to really notice it on a black screen.

    Hope this helps,
    SG

You could still purchase a PCMCIA TV tuner (PC Card - thats that thin "credit card" sized slot on the side of your notebook)...or a external USB TV tuner solution.

    There are numerous choices available.

So yes...actually, all PC's are "PC ready" as long as they have a USB connection.
