i just got mine for a week only. I notice the HDD got this sound once a while.
Is this sign of defect hdd?? or is just normal for all hdd??

in a day, let say i on it for 4 hours.. i think it happen 4 - 5 times.
the sound is like you just put a cd in cdrom, the clak clak sound...
but not as loud as that. when the sound happened, definitely there is no cd inside.

i hope im able to provide a clear picture about my situation.

huh?? but in my bios the acoustic mode i put bypass.

so actually it is normal and it won't suddenly just die of without me being able to backup my data.

since is not a defective hdd, atleast i dont need to change the hdd. im just worry suddenly during peak period with things inside and the hdd r.i.p.

    thank you deadsimple

The BIOS setting makes no difference for some of us, hence having to use the program to cut down the hdd noise. For some lucky others, the BIOS setting works and they don't have to use the program.

I'm not sure whether you're asking a question or making a statement, sorry :)

Basically if the noise occurs when you're not actually doing anything (and everything else is quiet), then yes it's probably the same sound we hear and there's nothing to worry about if that program gets rid of the sound.

If it happens during heavy disk activity and/or causes the system to glitch/freeze, etc .. then you might have a defective hdd on your hands.

    thanks..
because my brother's external hdd got the same sound after he accidentally knock on it. Now he can't retrieve some of his data inside already.

so just want to check with everyone.

yup, when everything is quiet. haha..atleast now i don't need to get the hdd replaced.

last question, how come it happen on the new inspiron model??
my inspiron 640m hdd do not have this sound.
hehe... if im not wrong i did not see people talking about this matter on the old inspiron model.
