My brand new Vostro came with Vista Business on it. (Sorry, couldn't help it, in my country there were no alternatives :-( ).
Now, a few things are starting to bug me, can somebody help me in shedding some light over these issues?

    1) Every two days or so, I lose 1 GB. For heavens sakes, ONE GIGABYTE. I started with 126 GB free, I am now at 117. What the heck is it doing with my diskspace?

    - additional information: I have only one restore point and none of the files I've checked so far have a previous version to restore. Moreover I deselected all the files from the indexing function the very day I turned it on.
Also, three days ago I set a maximum allowance of 6 GB for the shadow copies (just in case)

    2) The folder size feature. Nice: it won't tell me the size of the bigger folders. It just says: "size bigger than 270 MB" (this is for the windows folder).
    What the...?
    What is it? A joke?

    3) I launched msconfig to have a look at the services started. To my surprise I discovered that my boot mode is not "normal" (the first radio button in the boot pane) but "selective boot" (the third radio button, the exact term might differ since I have a different language version). Is this the way the other Vostros boot?
    Why not "normal"?

    PS
Talking about language. I dicovered that one the features that could have intereste me in Vista (which I didn't want) is not present in my Business version, namely the ability to control the PC via voice. I understand that microsoft could not possibly develop a software for every language, but, for crying out loud, why not to allow me to use the English version?

So System Restore + Shadow Copy is like the Time machine on Macs, it allows you to literally "go back" to let's say 2 days ago to fix any problems. Anything you downloaded. Gone. Plus side? Registry changes, files you accidentally erased will come back.

If you don't want it go to this website.

    http://bertk.mvps.org/html/diskspacev.html

It normally uses 15% of your HDD so yeah.

I already did that. And it reduced the maximum space on disk to 6 GB.
Problem is, Vista ate up some 9 GB since I first turned it on and I have no shadow copy whatsoever and no restore point but the one that was set during the installation.

So, what is that space used for?

(Oh, thanks for answering, by the way :) )
