I've noticed this twice--I turned my laptop off before going to bed, but it became powered on the next morning I woke up...

I set the computer to hibernate when I close the lid, so if the lid is closed, it should always be powered off.

Both time, I shut down the system and closed the lid and made sure that the whole thing is turned off. But the next morning, I found that my laptop was working with its lid closed (it's easy to see from the MediaDirect Blue light from the front). When I opened the lid, the laptop is already booted into windows...

This is scary. Does anyone have similar experience?

Hmmmm...... A ghost in the machine, eh? Do you have any wake ups set/ any jobs scheduled with wake up permissions / any external hardware connected? Also, since it's running vista, are you sure there's no background program that's interfering with shutdown?

Do you allow wake-on-lan or other devices to turn on the computer?

Did you call Dell and ask if they had any idea? We're paying a premium for these notebooks, and a 'superior' tech support team - take advantage of it!

I heard it was due to Windows Vista, I am not sure but I think it might have happened to me once when I put my notebook in my backpack, I thought I forgot to turn it off or put it into hibernation but I clearly remember that I did.

Don't know for sure, but I hear there is an issue with Windows Vista and hibernation.

Like I said earlier, look in your BIOS settings and make sure that you don't allow various devices to "wake" your computer up.

I looked in my BIOS and disabled all settings that may wake my computer up. But my computer still turns on by itself. (I noticed that this only happens when I put my computer to hibernate)

My solution for now is that I created a system password--so even if it turns on, it stays at the system password screen and does not boot into windows.

Don't think your case an entirely isolated incident. My M1210 did that quite a bit too (freaked me out the first few times!), but after installing Windows Vista, I haven't seen it happen since.

Its becuase you have aut update/backup/defrag on and its most likely the defrag which wakes up your system. t only occurs when its asleep and not off.

I would start worrying when it turns on when the battery is out.
