so i was just surfing the web like usual......all of a sudden, my laptop shut itself down.....not that "Please wait while window shuts down", it's the screen goes black, all LED turns off all less than a second kind of shut down

I was like ok, so i'll just turn u back on, NOPE

the laptop will not power on at all, no flashing screen or LED or anything...just this really weird crackling noise that's coming out of it. I took the battery out asap because i was scared it was going to explode. Right after that the noise stopped. But whenever I put the battery back in or try to run it on AC power the crackling noise resumes and still will not power on.

The dell online chat tech helped me open up the laptop and we try to remove the harddrive and RAM and still the problem was the same, I don't even know why he wanted to do that really. So now tomorrow a tech is coming to my house with a new motherboard and also a new hinge because i've been complaining about the media eject button being stuck sometimes. Hopefully that guy tomorrow know what's he doing and not one of the "useless" techs.

p.s. It may have been a power surge that fried my MB, that's my guess because it's raining today and power have been going in and out. I have tried to leave off the battery and hold down power button to discharge it, but it did not fix the problem. O well, best luck to me tomorrow, from now on my laptop's AC adaptor will be superglued to a surge protector to prevent this from happening again.

at least they're sending the parts overnight which makes my downtime only a few hours......i hope

So, I take it you don't plug your Laptop into a Surge Supressor?
Plz keep us updated...curious to know what the final verdict is.
    Good luck!

I suspect that the CPU fan is the culprit. That sudden shutdown is the classic overheating protection I have seen quiet a few times while converting videos.

The sounds may be of the fan trying to turn...can you open the back panel and see if the fan is working as it should?

I don't know the exact problem, but with the case open I don't see the fan attempt to spin as the crackling noise starts, and when i get my ears closer, the noise is coming from the RAM/CMOS battery area, which is far away from the CPU or fan cooling unit. I do not know if the MB short circuited or not, but I did get a new MB and a hinge cover overnight, but they forgot to send the tech along with it lol

now i have to wait till monday for the tech to come out, I would replace it myself but then it might void the warranty so I rather just wait and let the tech do their job i suppose.
