Go 7800 died a few days ago and when I called Dell to ask them which cards would be compatible with my E1705, they said the nVidia Go 7900 would work, but they didn't specify which one...GS, GTX, etc. So I just bought a 7900 GTX on ebay. Is it compatible or is only the 7900 GS compatible?? It looks like the GTX has two heat pipes and I'm pretty sure the 7800 only has one heat pipe. Ugh!! I'm confused!! Would ALL 7900's work or just the GS??![]()

It's the 7900GS that is compatible. There's a few articles online about modifying an E1705 to get a 7950GTX to work. In short, you have to break off a piece of plastic that separates one of the heat sink vents, cause the GTX's have two. Plus, you'll need a 130 watt power brick.
IIRC, you have to modify the bios too. I was considering doing this for fun, but I've had second thoughts. If you really want to play it safe, the best thing to do is find a 7900GS.
I can't find the articles offhand, but I'll look later when I have more time. -
Well, I guess I'm still a little confused because the GS also looks like it has two heat pipes.

Yes, it does work.
Search this forum. It's really simple to install, but you do have to break off piece of inside bottom housing in order to fit dual pipe into it.

You will need to mod the case.
Notebookcheck also has a guide/case study where they replaced the 788 with a 7900GTX in a E1705
