Have you tried the 304.79 beta drivers? You can find them on NVIDIA's site. They're under Beta and Legacy Drivers.

I'm using the beta 304.79 drivers, and so far haven't had a problem with them.

Please try shutting your laptop down, removing the power, reinserting the power then turning the laptop on. Once finished, your GPU should be working 'normally'.

Have you tried the beta drivers? Have you tried a hard reset? Some feedback would be nice.

Also, what are your CPU temperatures during Furmark?

Anything that causes the GPU to throttle seems to cause it. Confirmed things include using the laptop on battery and the CPU going over 80C. In practice, so long as you don't run any CPU intensive tasks for long periods (eg Folding@home, CPU intensive games) you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

I've posted this theory before, but it seems to me that the 'stop throttling' code in the bios does not work properly. If so, a relatively simple bios update by Dell should solve it.

can confirm that my gpu runs in 835 boost all time now...playes crysis 2 for 10min....................cpu temp normal etc.

i will call my DELL contact tomorrow (again) and really tell him to inform DELL tech support that they soon as possible rewrite new BIOS update.

Well, on my side, i got the latest beta drivers, along i tried the shutdown, replug power cord, and restart... i am always seeing 745mhz, never see the 835mhz boost... my cpu is at 46C... so nothing triggers throttling... i guess a bios update is really required.

Tried other programs than the "GPU virus" furmark? We all know furmark put an unrealistic high load on the GPU which often cause throttling/downclocking which won't happen in games.

I am not even using FurMark, just using GPU-Z logging feature... and all i can say, is even after a reboot of windows, where i shutdown the laptop, and even removed the battery, and then replugged the power cord then restart... after a clean reboot, the 1st app i start is GPU-Z, only to see it all the time at 745mhz.

Never saw it once go to 835mhz. So i wonder, do i have a defective 650gt? or is it all the same issue, and in my case, the bios is not even engaging the boost?

your card is fine trust me.......do you fell any lag during games ??? didnt think so............

i started to wonder myself after reading about this 835Mhz boost story. (never felt any lag in games before or now)....even that my gt650 runs in 835Mhz or 745 Mhz

I find some games are running better sometimes than others... like Diablo 3 for instances, sometimes i run it on HIGH at 60fps, and other it runs max at 52-53fps... (on the same act, same section, same quantity of items on screen... )

I am wondering when it happen if i was running at 835mhz or 745mhz... it might explain the loss of 7-8fps... beside that, no real lag... i need a very recent game which is using the system to the max to see something... if i play CS:Source, it stills plays over 200fps... so a drop in 8fps i don't give a flying rat!

You have GPU-Z set to continue updating in the background? It's not ticked by default, and under normal conditions having GPU-Z open wouldn't be enough to force the 650 into its boost clock state.

I do tell GPU-Z to keep working in background, and i play diablo 3 for like 30sec which i should see a difference... and i don't. 745mhz idle and it goes DOWN as i start Diablo 3... all the time on battery power...

It stays at 745mhz when i am plugged in. (Triggering Diablo 3 should be enough to trigger it to max boost... epecially on what it's doing when on battery, it's obvious something is triggered when i am playing on battery) See next post.

Even worst... when i play with power supply plugged in, it stays always at 745mhz... if i unlplug the power supply, it goes down to 135mhz... and the game is unplayable... See for yourself:

This is only happening on battery power... on a High Performance power saving setting (Not the Dell one, this one should clock everything to full speed... or not...) and as you can see Temp of GPU never goes higher than 60C... it's idle at 48C.

remove nvidia gpu driver inside the controll panel (add/remove program)

    restart computer

install DELL driver from dell support

    then try.

then it should look like this............. both furmark + gpu-z running........wanted to double-check that furmark monitored correct)

The 135 MHz is the optimus-induced idle state where the HD4000 takes over. I believe that this is the default state on battery to prolong battery life. Although the HD4000 is sufficient to run something like GTA3 at 1080p, it's going to seriously struggle on anything remotely recent at high settings.

As an aside, I do believe there's also a slight Optimus bug - it appears that the 650M is sometimes forced to render the desktop in P0 (745+ MHz 3D mode) rather than the HD4000 running it as should happen.

Bizarrely, loading graphically-demanding programs in the background can then cause Optimus to start working properly. Eg. if it is 'idling' in P0 at 745 MHz, you can load Cinebench without actually running a test, and this allows it to enter P8 at 135 MHz. If you then run a test it then correctly switches back to P0.

I'm confused. What do we need to fix? Seems the OP got the issue resolved with an uninstall/reinstall of the GPU driver, if I'm understanding correctly? Can someone summarize?

OK, so I thought I'd reproduce the problem using GPU-Z screenshots (using Cinebench to get the GPU working):

Starting from a normal state, with GPU boosting to 835 MHz:
    Before.gif

I then unplug the laptop and rerun cinebench:
    On-battery.gif

I then plug the laptop back in and try again:
    After-plugged-in.gif

So now 2 minutes later and despite being plugged in, the GPU is only getting up to 745 MHz. So, I shut the computer down fully and turn back on:
    After-shutdown.gif

Despite the full shutdown, the GPU still will not boost back to 835, and is still stuck at 745 MHz.

I am using the Dell A02 driver from the support page, which is 296.37 and i am still getting the same problem...

I can achieve the same result, see it downclock on battery use... But if i shutdown, unplug power, replug power, power on laptop and re-test, i am still at 745mhz... Never saw a 835mhz kick in... which is my problem.

Guys, I've been writing about this since day one.

Niblet seems to be the only one that got it right from the start. It's all documented in several topics, this one included.

Thing is most users might not notice this at all, ever. They hardly make use of the power this laptop can offer so they are safe and there is nothing to worry about. Well, unless they do want the machine running at close to full speed and then they will notice that CPU will drop to 1.2Ghz after a while and GPU can even go under 700Mhz. Then they will complain. How likely is this scenario? Probably not very for many 7720 owners.

Like I've said before, things are not as bad as XPS' situation.

I hope you know not all chips can be overclocked to every degree another exact chip can. Some maybe unstable, some may overclock without breaking a sweat and not increasing voltages. Also overclocking may void the warranty, so proceed with caution.

Completely agree with everything you say about OC'ing, but this issue is regarding normally clocked 650Ms not behaving as they ought to in the Inspiron 17R SE 7720, probably due to a small error in the bios. The 650M should run at 835MHz but here becomes incapable of running higher than 745 MHz.

This is exactly my problem... If the 650M should be working at 835mhz, mine is stuck at 745mhz, and never goes to 835mhz. This is my problem... but so far, it doesn't cause a headache as the performance is still good, it just could be better if i had 835mhz over 745mhz.

They're never going to "forget" to fix a problem. If it exists, and if they know about it, it'll get fixed eventually. Typically though their consumer line is slower, so you'll be waiting a couple of weeks for a BIOS update, most-likely.

So would this be an accurate short summary?
"GPU throttles as expected on battery only power, but will not restore to max clock when AC power returns. Reboot no fix. Customers must discharge flea power or flash BIOS to restore max clocks."
Just confirm my summary is accurate, and I'll get your post straight over.
Thanks for bringing this up. I should have been on this since day one. Sorry about that. No excuse for the miss on my part.
Would you be so kind as to post links to where this issue is being discussed to save me some Googling and Radian6 legwork? (Also speeds things up.)

I suggest you don't. Waste of time. Front line techs are not aware of the issue or potential fix. They'll ask you to format, take control of your system and update the driver, BIOS and whatever they think of. Bless their hearts, they're trying, but until I get the issue to engineering and they respond with a fix and KB article, techs are in the dark.
Stick with me here. I got this, and I got your backs. We'll fix this.

    No problem.

My original post I think was on this page http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...l-inspiron-15r-special-edition-7520-a-41.html #410

Niblet made a good summary of what I wrote then.

At that time I did not know that the GPU will also cut boost if CPU gets above certain temp level.

I was only searching for a solutions for others as well so than they do not reflash the BIOS again and again to get the boost back - this was the one I found everyone was using and so did I for a couple of times.

I found that this works - Shut down, unplug and plug again, Start. Boost will be active no matter how it got cancelled (due to battery use or CPU temp). It works as long as I do not unplug or the CPU temp does not go above 80°C (I'm not 100% sure about the temp).

I wonder if there could be a game mode where CPU would run at 2.3Ghz since it's enough for games and the laptop will not get hot as fast as using it to a full +3Ghz. Also maybe raise the throttle limit a little to let's say 95°C for 2.3Ghz since now it is rather low (more like 80-85°C). I'm not sure fan speed can be any higher, right now seems to do 3900rpm from what software tells me.

Or you might have other solutions.

So, to clarify, discharging flea power is not needed. All you have to do is shut down, unplug AC,, replug AC and boot back up?
Just sent the issue over. Will post back what I hear. Thanks again.

Do the 15R S/E guys report the same issue? I realize it's a different GPU, but perhaps if the 15 is doing it we can isolate the problem to BIOS quicker.

Thanks for this. I haven't heard of the problem in the 15R SE, but I don't think the 7730M GPU has a boost function so it may not be manifesting. I have heard of people being unable to overclock their 7730M GPU, whch could well be a symptom of the same problem (along with disabling the boost, the problem also prevents GPU OC'ing until fixed).

More generally, regarding comments on 'desirable' throttling behaviour, I've personally found the 3610qm CPU runs cool, struggling to get close to 80C unless you try something like Folding@home all day on 8 threads. This is in marked contrast to other similar laptops, so the CPU cooling system is clearly very good. In contrast, the GPU appears to run a bit 'hotter' than some comparable 650M laptops, although still won't hit 90C at normal clocking.

In practice, this means that the laptop is perfectly capable of sustaining full GPU and CPU speed simultaneously for normal (including gaming) use, so long as room temperature is reasonable and the cooling system is not 'fluffed up'.

Personally, I would say that 80C for the CPU to start throttling the GPU is a little low and would prefer an 85-90C threshold. I haven't actually seen the CPU throttle itself, but I would hope that it would not do so until the same 85-90C, and would only go down to 1.2GHz at a 'critical' level (I'd guess somewhere around 95C?). These are only personal opinions and I don't know whether these are reasonable or too 'aggressive' for general use!

Thanks again for forwarding the problem on to the tech guys!

After reading this post again and again... i saw that one solution was to re-flash the Bios... well, now i am getting the 835mhz after i reflashed... SO i am sure this is bios error somewhere as people stated... I will not unplug the laptop and will try it for a while and see if the 835 sticks... will then try the unplug and see... until we get a new bios flash i guess. A02 for the win!

No need to reflash the BIOS, it helps very little.

I'm not sure if it's fair to compare to other brands here.

Well in my case, i never saw the 835mhz mark... i decided to reflash the same bios (even if not recommended by Dell) and guess what... after the planned reboots after flashing... i started to benchmark, and SAW once and for all the 835mhz mark i should have seen before...

So flashing kinda got me out of an undesired loop... until i unplug the laptop i guess...Now, unplugging the laptop do put me at max 745mhz until i shutdown, unplug, replug and reboot, where i will have the 835mhz part... so same problem here.

@Dell-Bill_B: Any word on this? The difference in game playing is rather noticable and am hating having to full-shut-down, unplug, replug and restart to run games at their best... I also saw a post on the Dell Community forum here, but no solution as of yet.

I've upgraded to BIOS Version A08 with no difference in this regard...

    Please keep us posted :)
