I keep getting to the same spot in the game and it freezes and the game stops responding. this is madness.

I'm actually get the same sort of error, but oddly it only happens in one particular spot in Episode 2, not Episode 1 or the original game. I would try Steam's support section: http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/home.php

I haven't been able to resolve it with changing drivers, or for that matter, with the FAQ pages on Steam support. I filed a support ticket just a bit earlier.

ok you might have the same issue as me. In episode two after defeating the stalkers(?) an npc says "we held them off". And right at "off" it locks up.

I'm discovering that Episode 2 is just really buggy in general. I found a few discussion threads on other sites. Basically, the solution seems to be to try to do things in a different order... look a different way, move differently, etc. Also, make sure you have the latest updates. The crashes are obnoxious but generally can be worked around.

After an auto update for the game, it now works.

This problem was really weird. I booted it up about 5 times with different drivers and at the exact same word, the game crashed. It seemed totally unavoidable.
