I just got my 1520 yesterday and i've been noticing that the hard drive is always working / crunching away. Even if I close everything and let the computer sit at the desktop screen, the hard drive is doing something. anyone else have this problem?

That is normal for the first 5/10 mins, it's vista setting itself up. If it carries on after around 20 mins then I would reinstall Vista.

Don't you just love vista

Its the initial indexing I believe. This happened for the first week of my m1210, then the periods of crunching getting shorter and shorter. You could also turn indexing off and see what happens. Not it does it for about 1 or 2 min on boot up... usually less. And if you sleep it, it doesn't do it at all.

Yeah, it's the indexing. It'll stop after a few hours of pure hard drive crunching.

Vista also spends some time auto-defragging the drive as well AFAIK, but yes the usage should dramatically fall after about a week or two. It is learning how to best work for you.

It's vista learning for super-fetch, it should go away in a week.

Its noticeable on the 7200rpm hdds with vista, 5400 not so much. I noticed it on mine and like everyone said it goes away.

dicecca112 same with mine. I'm using my 1520 for the third day now and I was worried it's because I've chosen 7200 over 5400. So you're saying it's going to go away?

yup it will. Disable Indexing like they say. I used to here the drive arm moving every 30 seconds or so, now I only hear it maybe once every half hour or so. I barely notice it now
