any one have this. It is nearly always there. I called dell and they will send me a new unit.

how quiet should a laptop be? It is not a fan, optical drive or anything obvious.

I got that too. I noticed it most on high brightness settings. I'm sure it's not a horrible defect, but it does get annoying.

I had a high pitched continuous noise and also a high pitched 'squeaking' sound.
This only happened with the battery installed whilst connected to the mains. If I removed either the mains or the battery it would stop.

Dell sent me another battery which made no difference. They then replaced the AC adapter and motherboard and the problem hasn't resurfaced.

One more thing....just did a little test and it is significantly less noticeable when my notebook is operating only on it's battery, rather than being plugged in. I'm not sure why this is the case, but I thought it was interesting.

I have a similar problem with my E1505/6400. When using battery it is quiet but when plugged into AC and turned on it makes a very annoying high pitched whine coming from the left of the unit. It certainly isnt normal as other people who have this same laptop do not have the problem. I have emailed Dell to get it repaired.

A side note: It only makes this noise when the Intel GMA drivers are installed when running on generic drivers it does not make the whine.

right it is a whine, thats the word that was escaping me to describe it. Now dell is shipping me a brand new computer, I hope the display is as good. That is the risk for an exchange one takes.

it's not the display. At least not for me and my 6400. I tested because I closed the lid and the noise is still there.

As for why it's louder on AC, thats because by default on battery the CPU runs at a lower speed, which seems to affect it. Notebook hardware control allows you to control the speed, and sadly, the whine. !##!@

P.S. Let me know if your new unit whines!

Also, for me anyway, the whine is passed throught the headphone jack!

    Can anyone else confirm this?

I have a new 1505...and i have the high pitched noise in the background too...it's driving me nuts!! But if returning it for another does nothing I guess I'll have to live with it....keep me posted if you find anything else out I'd love to be able to solve this minor problem...

in the end, I will stick with it because I got a beautiful lg screen for the second time in a row and it rocks. not worth exchanging and rolling the dice.

I very highly recommend you downloading Rightmark CPU Clock Utility and turning on an option called 'Run HTL command when OS is Idle'. I had the same problem as you and this completely solved it. I can't guarantee it will do the same for you, but it's worth a shot, right?
