    Hello.
    I have:
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 (2.0GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB)
    RAM: 3GB DDR2 667MHz
    HDD: 250GB, 5400rpm SATA
DISPLAY: 15.4" TFT WXGA+ TrueLife 1440x900 with LED
Video card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 with 256MB
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate (Clear Installation)

    I have very strange poblem.
On Windows XP my video card Ati Radeon 3450 is recognized as Ati Radeion 3470 (with system driver and temperature about 70-73 C in IDLE)!

    On Windows Vista Ultimate:
    Idle mode: 54-59 (now 64 C)
Game Mode (NFS Undercover after 10 minutes for example): 80C

It is really horrible, because my video card is always over 50 C, and in games over 70-80 C after only 10-15 minutes!(not to mention crazy fan noise)

Plus Everest do not recognize the video card under Windows Vista correctly - on most places - Ati Radeon Mobility 3470

    I will provide you screenshots.

    Someone please:

    Advice,opinion, results?
    Is this normal at all?

    Thank you

Maybe dell did put a 3470 into there? Maybe that's why it's so hot? I'd contact dell immediately. It shouldn't be doing that. Even when I leave my dell studio on my soft bed for a couple hours, it never gets that hot at idle, with the radeon hd 3450. Or maybe something's wrong with the heat sink or fan. Like I said, contact dell.

    OK, but I'm in Bulgaria.
Now here is 06:21 morning - I will contact Dell as soon as possible.
    Thank you for the advice!
I guess the same thing - wrong 3470 with 3450 BIOS....
By the way - Do you have constantly the fan on?

Those temps shouldn't concern you they are well within the normal range.

No, I dont' have the fan constantly on. I'll get a picture of the HWMonitor temps as soon as I turn it on and leave it on a little.

Hey, slightly off topic but how did you check the temps of your GPU? HWmonitor does not show a temp for my graphics card.

I tested with some programs Everest,GPU,HW Monitor!
Someting amazing ( on both Everest and GPU)
My old Ati Mobile Radeon HD 3430 (on HP Compaq 6730s - same CPU,2 GB ram, same HDD) has better "real clock" and "bandwidth" than 3450!
And 3450 must be overclocked 3430 but....

By the way 3450 "real clock" and "bandwidth" is always stuck - with or without power supply!

    Screenshots!

While those temps, in my opinion, are high, they are normal for the inspiron.

Most manufacturers of lappys under perform thermally.

One thing that I do when gaming now is I place a book under the back edge of the laptop (since I have a 360 controller - a good investment!). This adds about an inch of air space beneath . . . I was actually toying with the idea of having a small fan blow under it also to see if that drops my max temps at all. So far, just creating some additional space knocked a couple degrees Cent off my max temps.

But first i'm on new Studio...
Second now without driver - the GPU Core temperature is 70 C (only skype + 1 IE Windows + HW Monitor)

And very strange "real clock" and "bandwidth" are always stuck on very low level - on both battery and power supply.

As I said my 3430 was faster!

So I think I have BIOS or Hardware Issue!
Still wait for screenshots from FatMangosLAWL !
    Thank you.

Same config, the oly diffs are CPU (T5850 - 2.16GHz) and lower RAM (2GB).
Idle temperatures (Firefox + Winamp + CPUID Hw).

Ya sorry that was a typo (you have a studio). Have you reinstalled the driver yet? Which driver are you using?

    The same....
Plus I re-installed the whole Windows Vista...
    Normal or Problem?

after reviewing the screenshots again . . . I see the discrepancy. It is reconized differently from the bus and the windows side.

I still think that your temps are in the normal range, and indeed, a good 10-20c lower than mine (my GPU regularly gets up around 90-92c). Your min temps are also in the 50's - hot but far from dangerous. And the screen shot you show having a high temp while 'idling' shows need for speed running. The GPU should cool down but obviously it doesnt happen right away, and minimizing a game does not always take its full demand on the system away.

Computers do not always report correctly to software and vice versa . . . unless you are getting errors, shutting down randomly, or experiance unusual slowdown (to suggest throttling) I wouldnt worry so much.

    I will agree with you.
    Very informative post :)
    Thank you for your comment.

The screenshot with "Need For Speed running" is under load - HW Monitor shows current, minimum and maximum temperatures. In this case our attention must be on maximum temperature - in game, HW background. This is why exactly I use HW monitor.Because you can just keep it open and play game. And after you can see details about your "in game" maximum temperature.
The second screenshot in my first post is IDLE.

    By the way.
Today I noticed - "some of touch multimedia buttons" in the middle was harder to be really pushed (with soft touch they just not work)!
And some other strange noises sometimes under the screen (sorry my English is not very good and I can't explain in details)...

WELL I HAD ONLY BIG SCREWDRIVER\TURN-SCREW - SO I screwed up ONLY THE BIG bolts (all small bolts + one small bolt in not very good condition are still untouched).

Now I have 5-6 C lower temperatures overall.
    THM: 37
    CORE 0;1: 36
    GPU CORE: 52
    HDD: 30

Now we have stove and radiator in the room and It is ultra hot for me.
May be I need to kill the man with the stove.
Again sorry my bad English, I have more to say but....

    Anyway I agree with mgh_a1.
IF I get unusual slowdown I can call Dell "Next Business Day" :)
God to bless Dell for "Next Business Day" very good option :)

Thank you for your attention guys.

By the way It will be interesting if everybody with Studio 15... share his/her temperatures, someting like statistic!

Hay There, I have the exact same laptop as you except that I have 4 gigs of ram an im having the same overheating problem.

The temp keeps moving between 56 and 65, when it gets to around 60 the fan starts up and the temp drops down to 56 again, this only started happening recently
just wondering if you found a solution

digbysa somehow "without" Ati driver or with Standart Windows Driver - Ati Radeon HD 3450 overhead or "is out of control"!
When you put Ati Driver (from Dell's Web or Ati Driver modified with Mobility Modder) the temperature goes down to about 49-50-55 degree!
I had my motherboard replaced (Ati chip is on motherboard too)..I had my Ati Chip replaced with motherboard...Plus we checked the thermal things....
and I can guarantee you - 50-55 C is normal temperature for Dell's Ati!
I spoke with some guys here and their cards have the same temperatures!

your problem can be only if you are with Standart Windows Video Driver - somehow it forces this Ati Card to keeps high temperature (about 65-70 C)

So with Ati Driver from Dell's Website your temperature must be around 50-55 C (normal work)
By the way overall my notebook is with Windows Vista SP 2 X64 now and It is (thanks GOD) pretty stable and fast!
