I've been researching this for a while (haven't found an answer yet), but once the new centrino comes out in April, will there be a noticeable performance difference over the current one (napa, merom)? I really couldn't care less about the wireless stuff, cause I can upgrade that later and i probably will rarely use it.

Is it worth the wait for the new centrino?

    I am interested in purchasing a E1505/6400.

Here's a list of features for Santa Rosa:

    Santa Rosa platform
The code-name Santa Rosa refers to the fourth-generation Centrino platform, scheduled for release in April 2007 with the following features:

Second generation Intel Core 2 processor (code named Merom) that uses Socket P
800 MT/s front side bus with Dynamic Front Side Bus Switching to save power during low utilization
Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset (code named Crestline) with Intel's GMA X3000 graphics technology
    Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n mini-PCIe WiFi adapter (code named Kedron)
    NAND flash-memory caching (code-named Robson)
WWAN Internet access via cellular networks (code-named Windigo)
    EFI, a successor to BIOS
    WiMAX
Integrated HSDPA (3.5G) wireless technology from Nokia.

Unfortunately, that's all the info that Intel has given out so far. We'll just have to wait a little longer to find out the real specs.

If you need a computer now, buy it. If you don't need one now, wait.

    Technology always gets better/faster/cheaper.

Is 800 MT/s front side bus SIGNIFICANTLY faster than napa's 667?

Notebooks are tools, not investments. Buy Merom now, or wait for Santa Rosa. Will it be significantly faster? Probably.

By the way, Montevina is expected in late 2007.

...Montevina being the successor to Santa Rosa, in case you didn't know.

In short, not really. The thing that's probably going to boost Santa Rosa's performance the most is the NAND onboard flash memory.

I agree. People always saying next month it will be cheaper and better but they fail to realize that if they keep saying that they will never get a new pc.

We have been benchmarking Crestline (965M)/Merom. Clock for clock, Merom is about 20% faster across the broad spectrum of CPU/notebook test suites when compared to Napa (945GM)/Yonah. This benchmarking excludes graphics, but the GMA on the 965 doesn't look too bad, performance wise....

I've bought one E1505 and although this new processor is coming out, and I will not try to upgrade it since it is not a big point of doing except throwing away the money. :)
