Hi ive just recently got a new laptop of the following specs

    xps m1710
    core duo 2.0 gig
    1 gig 667 mhz ram
    80 gig 5400 hdd edit its a 7200 rpm hitachie hdd :)
    512mb ram 7900gtx (free upgrade)

I downloaded a couple of programs to monitor laptop temperatures

NHC (inc patch for core duo and core 2 duo systems)
    and Rivatuner
My temps for CPU = 25 - 32 degrees celsius when idle or web browsing
My temps for hdd = 43 degrees celsius when idle or web browsing

These seem ok to me but its the GPU which is worrying me

Using rivatuner i can monitor the temp but it shows at around 75 - 80 when idle or web browsing!!!!  (my fan kicks in around 80 degrees celsius which then lowers the temperature again to about 64 degrees celsius)

Basically when idle i cant hear the fan at all and so it climbs up to about 79 degrees and then when i hear the fan come on it goes down to around 69 - 71

This is a new laptop. Any ideas what the problem could be? Are the 7900GTX cards supposed to be this hot?? And at what temperatures are they ok before frying? I'm extremely worried ill fry my graphics card and everything else if im not careful. (yes the laptop is very warm underneath)

Well, it's not exactly an Intel GMA 950. It's one of the best GPUs out there. What screen size is your laptop?

    its 17" :D

maybe i need some kind of program which controls the fans on the laptop. i.e. if i set them on medium - high then that helps control the gpu temp.

    Hi everybody.

Some days ago i feel very very worried about the heat on my system.. (same as the one listed above).. so i was wondering to know how can i get the system cooler.. in the first time i though my system was with fails.. and the fan doesnt work.. i have to send it back to warranty.. (thats a problem cause actually i live now outside states)..

now with this app.. i see the fans are working.. and actually my problem was with the right one.. it didnt work.. as i would like.. and on the right side gets very very hot.. (i guess under on the base its the GPU)..

so this app really help me out.. but i got the question still.. Does i need to send it to warranty.. cause.. without app the system doesnt realize it gets very hot and the fan cool that area.. so i ahve to send it back or this is common on xps m1710

    this is the numbers
    cpu 93 F
    gpu 138F
    memory 114F

this is with the app workin.. i guess i'll use the appe always.. cause i dont want to damage my system for this hot

    thank you for your words.

can you not configure I8KfanGUI so that your fans come on at much lower temperature thresholds? Sure this might mean that the fans are on a lot so the lifecycle might not be as long.

atm i havent tweaked anything. (gpu fan comes on at exactly 80 deg celsius) and havent experienced any problems. I imagine theres a failsafe built in to stop people frying boards etcs

am running the Fear demo in 1600x1200 everything on maximum except with no shadows (for some reason shadows occasionally caused stutter this could also be the slow hard drive though hrmm) seems to run very nicely indeed :)

thanks for your words.. now.. i set. the fans to react to the temperature.. with the I8KfanGUI app... and it looks nice.. i do some design work and with photoshop and that stuff.

so.. just in case.. its normal that the base of the notebook gets very hot.. really?.. its normal on this system that?

    thank you

    inz,

well the base of mine certainly gets hot (but not uncomfortably hot) so i dont rest it on my lap i rest it on a sort of large tray thing which supports the sides of it it but doesnt block the airflows.

inz, do you have a xps 1710?? Is I8KfanGUI working fine on your system? Ive been reading on the I8KfanGUI forums that its somewhat erratic/unstable for the 1710.

Ive found the BEST way to control laptop temp is using the processor presets through NHC. Ive got the m1210 with the intel GMA 950 graphics card. I play an MMORPG with okay graphics. Without anything done to help the temp, it will hit 85+ degrees celcius. I8Kfangui can knock it down to 70s, but putting the NHC flag on the bottom right to "Battery Optimized" pushes it down into the mid 50's, with very little noticable difference in gameplay.

Silversurfer.. yes i got.. one xps m1710.. and i was wonder. tat.. the I8KfanGUI works on mine system.. cause i hear there was problems with the dualcore things... and i found something like I9kfanGUI and i installed it but the GUI was so ugly so i return to the before one..

in few words it works good.. stable. and i like it..

i was worried cause the right base side.. gets hot.. but with the app.. it gets NOT so hot... he he..

i was worried cause if i need to send it back to get some warranty.. i live in Peru (southamerica).. so its a bit hard to do that thing..

but if you tellme that your system gets hot... thats a relief.. anyway if you could send me a pic (inzlabs at gmail dot com) about your tray.. where the notebook goes.. ... cause i am new on this notebook stuff.

    thanks

you might want to look into getting a notebook cooler and applying Arctic silver to your CPU and GPU

    (search for the links)

Just remember when using I8kfangui, your vcard temps will read low by 8c. So if it states you are running 52c you are really running 60. There is an adjustment in the options where you can correct this. But your card is WAY TOO HOT. You need to call Dell and get that replaced. Maybe for the trouble you can get them to give you a free 7950 upgrade. It shouldnt be too hard to weasel that out of them.

I have my gpu fan set in fangui to activate at 65c. That kills my temps nicely though I found it is not really necessary.

Just as a comparison. I have a 7900GS card with stock clocks @ 375/500. I am overvolted and overclocked to 600/800 now permenantly and my idle temps sitting here typing are around 56-60 depending on what is flashing on screen. My max I have ever hit at this clock was 87c and that is because I had a vent blocked by accident.

do you mean mine? I should mention that the GPU never goes over 80 degrees celsius as the fan keeps it below it (usually cools it to around 65 or 70 then switches off but then comes on again when temp rises)

the cpu temp highest ive seen is 66 degrees celsius but comes down to 25 degrees
the hdd is stable between 25 - 43 degrees celsius.

So Dell will happily check my laptop and if there is a problem with the gfx they will give me a new one? (yeah its still under warranty)
What if they cant find a problem? Also how do i know what the correct temps for my laptop is? Ie what its operational maximum temps are under load and not under load?

regarding I8KfanGUI i would worry if i installed it to control the fans that on even just one occasion where it failed to startup my fans at a certain temperature then the GPU, CPU etc would just keep heating up!!!!! ergo major meltdown

edit: by messing about with the BIOS does this invalidate the warranty?

    thanks :)

    Notebook Hardware Control

    app for monitoring temps

and GMA950 is Intels quad-core secret weapon against ATI and Nivida's GPUS :D

only kidding! its basically an integrated graphics solution rather than a dedicated graphics card. No its not as good as a dedicated card i'm afraid.

Yeah silver, your GPU according to your first post is about 10c higher than normal with the fans on. That could cause a problem when getting into 3d apps where the gpu starts to heat up. Forget ANY overclocking on that card.

hrmm well i downloaded Nvtemplogger and set it to go off alarm if the temp on the gpu reaches 90 degrees celsius then i played fear multiplayer for a while and it was fine. But yeah i might phone dell see what they can do for me.
