that 25% mystery coupon... made a huge difference if you start from a base model instead of a package..

    vostra 1500
    t7500
    160gb
    256 8600 gt
    extra 6 cell
    bluetooth built in
    intel wireless g
    camera built in
and everything else standard came to 1073 shipped...

i was paying about 900 for the 5470 chip w/ 120gb drive, 8600 gt, and no extra battery

for just under 200$ i upgraded the drive, went to the 7500, and got a spare battery pretty sweet if you ask me gonna cancel the first order tomm just be a bit longer wait.. and i have 4gb on the way of patriot ram as well.... not bad id say for under 1100?? what do you think

I thought about doing the same, my current order would be about $40 cheaper. Could go for a T7300 for around $100 more. But at this point I'll be happy if they'd just send the damn thing.

The 25% laptop coupon no longer works. Probably reached its usage limit or expired at midnight.

Did I miss something or you're getting only 512mb RAM?
Because if you do, there's no way you're going to be able to use vista with it.
Anything less than 2gb for vista is asking for serious trouble (though 1gb can be sufficient for limited uses).

512 i am upgrading it when it gets here... i already have 4gb for it

i got a secong battery because they dont last forever usually a couple years.. for "free" i figured what the heck right the 9 cell would have cost me 75$ with it added into the price not sure how that works out??

i didnt see anything else i really needed or wanted..

and anyone can add 2gb of ram with one of the rebate specials now fry's has 2gb for 50$ after rebates.. def not worth going through dell for it..

Absolutely. ~$1100 is my tipping point for the 1700/1720, which often (not always) prices out almost identically to the 1500/1520. Configured with a 7300 CPU, 8600 GT GPU, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD and Intel Wireless N, I can't get below $1300 even with the coupons (when I apply the 25% off coupon, I actually get a higher price, as it cancels out other discounts). Have any suggestions on how to equal your accomplishment with the 17" models? Please PM me if you do!

HOw much do you have to spend to get the 25% off or does it have to be on a certain system?

Interestingly, the 1700 is actually *less* without the coupon ($1203 vs $1212), since Dell takes 25% off the "sticker" price of $1617 with the coupon, but offers a bigger "discount" just by pricing it out with their normal discount.

Hey, make sure you get 64-bit Vista / XP if you have 4 GB's of RAM. A 32-bit OS will only recognize 3 GB's of RAM.

i guess it depends on the system.. with the base 1500 and the coupon it was alot cheaper than the value one.. after i added what i wanted i tried every config possible for like an hour last night i could not get mine any cheaper

    the 1500 i ordered was 1064 w/ coupon..
1252 w/ out and regular config using value pack ... same specs

there was no way except the baseline models the coupon didnt lower the prices on the 1500's. in order for the coupon to really help you needed to have a config that added almost everything in.. on the 1700 with the t7500 160gb, 8600gt etc the same way i ordered my 1500 i get

    1216 with coupon (t7500)
1358 the normal value pack with add ons..same config as the 1216 one

so this coupon really adds up once you start adding stuff in..

What screen resolution did you choose?

well t7500 vostra 1700 w/ everything but the 2g ram (which can be added for about 25-30 nowadays) was just over 1200 a steal if you ask me.. add the extra 1 gb later lol...

i chose the truelife one the xga+ .. they said it may delay shipment but the estimated ship date is the 16th and i called as well and they said there should not be to long of a wait.. (we'll see) im debating whether i want to change to a 1700 now lol.. for 150 more it almost seems to good not to

One thing to keep in mind (unless I'm missing something) is that you can't get TrueLife XGA+ with the 1700- it's either XGA+ w/out TrueLife (matte, I assume) or WUXGA with TrueLife for an additional $150.

yeah i saw that im not a fan of matte lcd's myself.. ive been comparison shopping to see how good of a deal i really got and id say its not AWESOME but def a good one.. lenove was not to much more sager was way higher etc... depends on the manufacture.. maybe i should have stuck with the base model for under 800 with the 8600 gt .... ehh you only live once..

Well, I just re-priced the 1720- I thought I had properly taken your advice before and started from scratch, but I guess I was using a "smart bargain" configuration after all. With only the base model (which includes 2GB RAM and a 160GB HD for "free"), I priced out a T7300, 8600 GT, WUXGA screen, Intel Wireless N Inspiron for $1614, and was able to use the $300 off coupon to bring it down to $1314.

More importantly, if I was able to get a working 25% off coupon and apply it to the $1614 model, it would go down to **$1211.** THAT, I think, would be hard to beat.

I read a year or two back that Dell was going to cut back on their byzantine coupon-based pricing scheme and actually try to make their prices consistent and understandable. Guess they abandoned that one.

So what do folks think? Can I get my 1700/1720 for closer to $1200 than $1300?

Except that those were just specs I was using for comparitive purposes- I wouldn't want to settle for Home Basic (I want Home Premium), and I think I do want the WUXGA (1920 x 1200) LCD upgrade. That alone adds about $180. If I could get *that* configuration at $1200, that would do it.

Here's my two cents on 1700 vs. 1500- to me, if I'm getting something to use as my standalone desktop replacement notebook, I want 17". I definitely notice the difference in size and would regret losing those 2". If I was going for portable, on the other hand, I'd want 14", which I think is easier to carry around and easier to hook up to an external monitor. To me, 15.4" is slightly too small to use as a standalone but slightly too big to hook up to a monitor.

Then again, I will probably take my laptop out of my house twice a year, if that- I'll mostly use it in one place and occassionally bring it from room to room, so any bulkiness issues with the 17" aren't a big deal to me. If I was moving it around more, I might feel differently.

see i take mine with me all the time.. so i think 17 will be a bit to big imo now that i think more.. my wife's toshiba is 15.4 and a bit small but if i had to lug anything larger around im not sure i would ever take it with me lol...

i dont need more than basic since i have current lic and keys for everything incl ultimate.. i have a freind who got me them oem new he owns a comp shop.. so i just have to pick one when i get the vostra and use that new key and yes its legit..

i have yet to find another system on the market that can touch the one i configed for 1064... think i should even try for more?? lol.. or be happy with it..

Sounds like the 1500 is perfect for you, then- if you're moving it around a lot, you'll be unhappy with the 1700.

Good friend to know- I'd love an Ultimate code, legit or not!
