i am working on a dell 1440 and i have no screen.i assumed it was the power invertor but the screen will power up on a different computer.as i understand it this screen has the invertor built into the lcd screen itself.is this a motherboard issue or something else.any ideas would be helpful.

Hi,
As Commander_wolf mentioned, if the system works fine with an external display then it is the issue with LCD screen or the power inverter. You may also check the connector cables for any possible lose connection or damages.
Please use the below link to view/download the service manual of Inspiron 1440, you may refer to the same if required.

I hope this helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance.

The unit will not show graphics thru the external display port.I am sorry i hadn't mentioned that sooner.

Then you probably have some issue with the motherboard rather than the screen. The cost of a replacement might be a significant fraction of the value of the laptop, so you may want to consider replacing the machine entirely.
