After receiving my 1520 yesterday, I played with it for a while, then i started to hear this sharp noise from the left of the laptop. It was barely audible with the fans is on. But when the fans is in low-speed or off, it is very annoying. The worst part is that when i use headphone instead of speaker, the noise just gets amplified, it actually hurts my ears.

Have any1 else had this problem? I'm open to any possible solutions and suggestions. Thanks

is it coming from the speakers? or a high pitched whining from inside the machine

Sounds like feedback, if it is, then I think it's a problem with laptop and not something drivers can fix.

sounds like its coming from a program you're running or something of that nature if it gets amplified by your headphones.

Its from inside of the machine, where the cpu is located. The speakers are fine. It is only unbearable when i plug in the earphone.

There is probably something you are running causing a constant stream of sound, and since your headphones are probably higher quality and pickup on the signal more, the hissing also gets amplified. Figure out whatever you're running or try reinstalling/using a different OS and see if the same thing happens.

sounds like it is the dreaded cpu whine....
i thought dell would have fixed it by now after so many m1210 owners moaned and complained about it.
try using the RMclock program to get rid of it, if the program fixes it then very likely it is the core2duo problem which i am afraid is unfixable other than running the RMclock 7/24

don't settle call dell... they'll 1) fix it 2) allow you to return it or 3) replace it.

I think I might hear what you are talking about as well now that I've had my laptop alone in a quiet room with no TV or fans on. It really doesn't bother me though; just typing or having an AC running in the room completely covers it up.

The high pitch noise is the one that comes from the core 2 duo processor, when it switches to low power state to save battery power. But ironically it happens when the notebook is in AC power also. Almost every new notebook has this noise issue. I had returned back a hp dv6000t and a sony vaio FZ-190 because of the same high pitch noise issue.

Some say the RM clock cpu monitoring utility solves this problem.

i had a dv6000t so i know what u mean. it really sucks...
try the rmclock thing. it helped some ppl...

Is this apparent with all core2 duo's or just some unlucky ones?

i bought my e1505 in june and i've been experiencing the same problem. dell would keep sending me the hard drive to replace but it didn't fix any. i requested a technician to visit my home and check the issue, but dell would rather replace my entire system..

that was about a week or two after new 1520 was released and now my 1520 is in boxing stage, supposed to be shipped out tomorrow. =)
luckily, due to the release of new systems, i had my cpu and gpu upgraded for free. the only downside was that i cannot get the webcam and the remote, as dell can neither add accessories nor modify the order since it's the replacement. well, i guess i have to settle with the new one and hope it wouldn't make any stupid noise that gives me headaches..

Can anyone else confirm? A few people in here seemed to indicate it's endemic to all Core 2 Duos...I'd hate for that to be the case, as I'm about to buy one :(

I am pretty sure Dell will not replace. This happened to mine with my sony vaio. Sony service said that the noise is within the design specification of the notebook and it is an inherent problem.

Wait till you hear lot of complaints about this noise. If Dell gets too many calls regarding this, then they might update the bios, similar to what HP did.

ok go to the bios and disable the intel accelerated thing and the speedstep. its in "performance"

this removes the whining noise, but obviously forces ur processor to be at max speed. i will try later to see whether its the speedstep or accelerator that causes the issue.

Having the same problem and it's driving me nuts!

But I've found a permanent solution.

Turn your power plan to "high performance." When I do that, the noise instantly goes away.

I think the CPU fan is just plain noisy when the voltage to it is reduced, and is asked to run at low speeds. But at normal (full) speeds, there isn't any weird fan noise.

    Hi,

I have the same problem on my Inspiron 1720.
I've called Dell and they send me a tech on Friday, to change the motherboard.
I will let you know if it resolve my problem.

That doesn't work for me :(

I have the same problem but does it only happen when you listen to the earphones or is it if you have the sound up. This noise is the only thing "wrong" with the laptop so I don't think i want to go through the stress of returning it
