I just unpacked everything and played around with vista. There is a medium-sized gap at the right side between screen and hinge and the HD cover sticks out a bit on one side...apart from that the build quality seems exellent. I will take some time later to investigate further.
And the CPU whine is very noticeable...its so annoying. I read that you can (maybe) turn it off with the bluetooth option thing, but in my device manager there is no option of "blueooth radios". Can someone help me?
Lastly, I will post a ton of pictures and more details as soon as I get time.

search for whine in this forum and you'll heard lot of "fixes" for the cpu whine, however most of the are not 100% effective, they just make it less annoying ... in the device manager turn on the power option that disables the device if its not being used for any device you can, also there is a bios tweak that helps it... and finally RMClock seems to help it but at a cost of less battery life and unexpected freezes

Your device manager should look like this. Uncheck this.

Just called XPS Technical support, the guy was extremely friendly and supportive, said he knows about the whine (said its most likely caused by a broken fan) and even gave me a free upgrade to wireless-n! Also emailed me his phone number and email address as well as case number and dispatch number.
An excellent support experience! -
I thought you were experiencing cpu whine.. I could be wrong, or the tech was full of it.
-
I don't care why its doing it, I want a laptop that doesn't do it and am hoping me replacement will be just that. -
Im glad you are happy with the experience you had, although, you are the first I know of to get an upgrade on system peripherals. Dont be surprised if it doesn't occur because the replacement order is a computer generated order which means, the order made is based exactly on your previous order.
You will be able to tell if you get a tag number just before it is shipped; just ask and they will provide you with it. If it is not in your new system, ensure you have the name of he who guaranteed it and they can send you the card for you to upgrade yourself.
This is a more believable scenario as I have experienced and been told that your replacement order cannot be adjusted from the original given exception to a system upgrade (ie m1210 to m1330).
Next the CPU whine is normal and occurs in 1/2 of all orders. The other whine is new and has become common as well. It usually occurs only when the system is plugged in and the battery is charging between 80 and 100% mark. The noise is very distinctive and from where the adapter plugs into the system.
Good luck and keep us advised. -
Hmm 50% of laptops, my guiness.
The person did not actually "re-order" my laptop, he took about 20 minutes to re-configure a laptop using Dell's website, this he claimed would ensure that I would get my upgrade. I will post again when I receive it. -
Ya I know...it comes from this thread...

As for reconfiguring your laptop, thats the first Ive heard of them being reordered like that. Im interested to know how it turns out. -
Me, too
It took him literally 20-30 minutes, and he said he also had to talk to his supervisor. He told me at first that it wasn't possible unless I talk to customer support (when I said I wanted to upgrade to n-card in my replacement) but then said he would ask his supervisor...5 minutes later he comes back and tells me he will configure a new system for me using dell's website ordering system. He said I will get the n-card upgrade free "for my troubles".

Does anyone else experience this? -
Yes, I had commented previously that there are those who state the noise occurs when the charge is at 80-100% on or off but ALWAYS charging, plugged in, and the noise comes from the power input on the laptop.
-
Yes thats what mine does, its 3x as loud as the CPU/Fan whine :-(
okay, m1330 received
